.22 lr dud question

Lately I've been sticking to the 300-350 round packs. They usually cost about the same as the 500-550 round packs, but are higher quality with no loose bullets, dud primers, weak powder charges, etc.

Pretty much every manufacturer makes them, I think Winchester has a 333 round pack, Federal makes Auto Match 325? round packs, etc. Best comprimise between 500 round bricks with a lotta duds and the CCI stuff which is very pricey in comparison.

I would first try out some different ammunition.

I own and shoot quite frequently my Ruger 10/22, and Federal Champions run great through it.

If you're still getting duds, I recommend this... load the round up a second time and see if it fires on the second strike. If it does, maybe your springs are a bit loose.

I have to do this once in a while in my Ceiner 22LR conversion kit for my Beretta 92. Only once has the round not fired... it was a true dud.

Most bulk-pack/loose-pack rimfire ammo is inconsistant as far as quality control goes.

I expect a few duds with my mar60, usually out of a 200 round range session 3-4 duds is the norm.

Big thing to do here is get your firing pin and springs checked out. Also get the extractor chkecked out just in case....I have seen some strange things happen with rimfires when extractors get stuck.

Different guns like different ammo. While Remington Golden does have a bad reputation for quality, try other brands too. In my experience, CCI runs pretty good in most 22LR guns but YMMV.

I think your Remington ammo is the problem. I'm not a fan of anything Remington, but I think even most Remington fans will agree that their .22 ammo sucks. That being said, I've seen several 10/22's in stock form that would stovepipe every few rounds on Federal Bulk pack ammo. A VQ extractor seems to fix this if you have one of the ones that won't cycle on it. I personally prefer Winchester bulk packs, but the Federal is pretty good too.

The Federal 510 ammo imo is even better, and not much more, however it's a solid tip not a hollow point.

If hunting you may want to use CCI mini mags or similar. However, for plinking, I see no reason not to use bulk packs and save the money. If you get a dud now and then just throw it out.

well that was a pretty low rate for if u only got 4%. ive bhought 2 bulkpacks of remington .22 ammo. at 2 different times.

both where thunderbolt i belive. shot them threw my ruger mkIII and i would (no lying) get 1 dud in every magasin so 5 dudes from 50. 10% D/R

first i thought i got a ****ty batch well after a few months i bhought a new brick from another seller. well that gave me a dud aswell in every damn magasine. dud was between the 1 and the last shot. never again.

CCI Blazer .22 and federal bulk have worked fine for me. about 10 thousand rounds later not 1 single dud or jam/misfunction or anything!

Ive had duds with bulk golden bullets, also squibs and bullets stuck in revolver barrels. same with the cheap winchester in the silver box. I usually shoot cci but if reduced to one of the above, i take a cleaning rod to the range in case of stuck bullets.
They could do better. They should do better. But they don't./

I noticed in a recent side by side test of rifles, Fiocchi brand 22 ammo, that i have not worked with much, was remarkably consistant in both rifles. The price is a bit on the high end but for super tight work it may be the way to go. Most 22 ammo has an error rate, which almost depends on the lot run. Looking over the chronograph results Fiocchi was less than 50 fps per round. Thats close to match quality, in bulk lot 22.

Shoot the duds again, most times you hit d bad spot on the primer rim...

Exactly. My own "true" dud rate (3 strikes and no bang) is almost exactly zero, even with bulk pack ammo. Single strike duds average 1-2% in my experience.

Clean the rifle a good one, the bolt too, examine the firing pin for a flattened spot from dry firing (are the misfires having a light strike or a nice deep impression?), perhaps replace the FP spring. I collect the 22's I find at the range on the ground (quite literally thousands over a year) and fire them in a bolt action rifle I bought. Nearly all the rounds with strike marks fire when I try them.

Good luck
Patty

When you field strip your 10/22 for cleaning take a look at the face of the firing pin. I may have been damaged (slightly mushroomed) from dryfiring. This would increase the surface area of the firing pin face and it may not indent the rim sufficiently to ignite the mechanical shock sensitive primer compound.

I've never had a dud in thousands of rounds of Federal and Winchester 22LR bulk packs in a CMMG dedicated 22LR AR upper and a Walther P22. Now Remington 22LR, had 5 - 10 duds out of a 550 round box, which seems about average across the spectrum judging by this thread.

My stock 10/22 likes Remington Golden Bullets pretty well. RGBs work better than Federal Bulk in my rifle. I think every rimfire has unique ammo likes and dislikes.

Having said that, CCI MiniMags work almost perfectly in every .22 I shoot. If the extra cost doesn't bother you, get the good ammo.

But if you shoot so much that the cost matters, I say put up with the 4% failure rate.

I didn't notice anyone specifically mentioning CCI Blazer 22s. I bought a case (5,000 rounds) for $90 about ten years ago at Sports Authority and at the time they were the cheapest 22s that were locally available.

They were great for shooting bowling pins, my main addiction with 22 pistols, and plinking with my semi-auto rifles. I'm sure I must have had some failures, but the rate is so low I can't recall enough of them to rate the failures.

Even with the FTF rate of Remington Golden Bullets and Thunderbolts, I still buy them and shoot them. How important it is to me mainly depends on what I'm shooting at or shooting with.

I agree.
For me, I find the Federal for the same price at my store, so I buy that. If they only had Remington, I wouldn't go shopping around for something else.
When I'm shooting at anything other than paper, I use CCI.

You bought crap. Get some good ammo. Federal 510 if you can find it. CCI otherwise.
