.22 LR Rifle Recommendations

I've got a number of centerfire rifles, but the only rimfire I've got is an old Ward's bolt action single shot that my Dad passed down to me. His dad bought it for him in 1941. Accurate as heck, but reloading after each shot is getting on my nerves. Also, it has much sentimental value for me, so I'm not inclined to use it very often.

Other than the 10/22, are there any other semi-automatic .22 LR rifles that have the following characteristics:

1. Normal capacity detachable magazines (20 or more rounds) available
2. Aftermarket parts readily available
3. Built in rail (either Weaver or rimfire rail)
4. $250 or less

I'd welcome some opinions. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you want a 10/22 from the criteria you listed.

Ummmm.....not really. The 10/22's got the market pretty well sewn up.

There's the Remington 597 and some of the Marlins, but they don't really match up in the parts department for aftermarket, or have rails.

Hmmm ... 20 rnd detachable ......... well FWIW .. I reckon the Marlin 60 at not much over $100 is worth a look ... dependable .. rimfire rails integral .. 15 rnd capacity ... and pretty danged reliable.

Spend more by all means .. lots of nice stuff out there - just can't name it right now!

Do you mind if I ask why you don't want a 10/22? You could pick one of those up for ~$160 and add a $30 VQ sear to greatly improve the trigger pull as well as a scope base (if you don't like the factor-included one) and rings for another $40. That's just about your quoted $250 price.

You could also look at the T/C .22LRs. It's up for debate whether they'll introduce a 20+ round magazine once the AWB sunsets.

I didn't say I didn't want a 10/22.

I am looking at what is available, and making a decision based upon the comparisions.

If you already have an AR15, there are conversion options in the price range you specified. The drop in Ceiner kit and the CZ upper are both options. The Ceiner won't be as accurate but does have the advantage of having 30 round magazines already designed. Sales will resume shortly.

Whoops! I interpreted "other than a 10/22" to mean you wanted options that are not a 10/22 because you don't like them. Upon rereading your original post, I can see I erred.

You have pretty much already talked yourself into a 10/22. I have one that my dad bought in the '70's as a rat gun. In all the years I have had it I can only count a few malfunctions, mostly ammo related. Add in that it was NEVER cleaned until about 1995, and you can understand how good these things really are.
Kind of like the AK of .22s. Not the most accurate or the most handsome and not without a few faults, but supremely functional.
Since you already have an accurate one, the 10/22 is as good of choice as you are gonna find.

No, I really haven't talked myself into a 10/22. And I don't dislike 10/22s either. But I appreciate y'all letting me know what you think I'm thinking.

I'm looking for some alternatives to compare to the 10/22. That's all.

Heck, with a couple aftermarket parts, the 10/22 is not only supremely functional, but also darn accurate.

Only problem is, those coupla aftermarket parts will cost you as much as the gun. I can't see buying a receiver for that much.

OTOH, it may be the best way to meet the specs you list. I'm not aware of another option.

Closest may be the Marlin Model 60, but it does not have a detachable mag. OTOH the tube holds maybe 15-17 rounds, and you can reload it pretty fast with a tube-type "speedloader".

Sure ........ Marlin 60 you are ''stuck'' with tube mag ..... 15 rnds capacity. But yeah .. a ''Spee-D-Loader'' can make for some quick reloads ........ once primed up ..... 8 quick fills of 15!

Have you seen the new Walther G22 ? I imagine Walther will produce larger capacity magazines after the AWB dies. They come with a weaver rail, good sights, and plenty of accessory options. I saw one at a local gunshow for about $300 give or take. I imagine they take P22 magazines, which by the way will probably be next .22lr autoloader. I bought a Ruger target model Mark 2 a couple of months ago and I love it, but, the P22 is soo small it is a must have! Haven't heard any word on their performance but I don't think Walther makes garbage. Good Luck!

Other Semi-auto? Maybe Thompson Center's 22 auto - But think its higher priced.

If you would consider a bolt action alot more options are available.
