Hi Guys,
I am looking for a .22 lr mostly for training but also hunting purposes. It should have top notch precision, a picatinny rail a threaded muzzle.

I'm interested in shooting subsonic ammunition and possibly with a suppressor.
So a semi automatic rifle might not be the best choice, or would it?
I usually feel most at home with a bolt action rifle. But if a semi automatic would work reliably with subsonic ammo and suppressed that would also be nice.

Of course the gun itself and the picatinny rail should be available in Europe. Meaning only the big ones like Marlin, Savage, Ruger or European companies like Anschütz or CZ.

I've tried to look up old threads but it's difficult to find information that fits my requirements.

costs are not my biggest concern. If the package is right I am willing to spend.

Thoughts anyone?

volquartsen makes some very nice barrels for various actions that are twisted for larger projectiles and have threaded muzzles. i bought a couple. they are well regarded for accuracy

I went with a 10/22 with some aftermarket parts to get pretty much what you're looking for. It has a PWS T3 barrel for excellent accuracy and light weight. All standard subs cycle with or without a suppressor, although I prefer remington subs for squirrel hunting.

I recently picked up a 10/22 TD that comes kind of close to your needs.

It is in stainless, threaded barrel and pretty accurate. I stuck a Ruger 10/22 LaserMax laser on it, so now it has a "rail" on either side of the laser/barrel band. Plus it's shipped with a rail, but you could get a picatinny rail for it. I really like that little rifle.

Hallo!

If accuracy is your main requirement, stick with a bolt action. CZ offerings are very good. You can buy an aftermarket picatinny rail to fit on top. And then take it to your local gun smith who will thread the barrel (my local charges around 60€ to do this), and you can always get him to shorten the barrel slightly if you're going to fit a moderator. I can recommend Finnish SAK-brand ,22 supressors, which are around 30€. They work as well as anything else I've seen for ,22.

I'll second the CZ suggestion. Accurate, well-made, and goregous. Not to mention cost-effective!

FinnComm, I bet you just LOVE letting everyone in the USA know how you can buy an effective 22 moderator for about $100 ;)

Good luck on the project!

Um 30€ is about 41$, no? :) How much is a ,22 moderator over there?

(In all honesty, it's easy to haggle a SAK mod into the deal here, and so it should be when looking at our rifle prices. Still, what price happiness :) )

I'm not knowledgeable in this area but I should be reasonably close.

About 425-450€ total ($600-ish)

We have to pay the Govt $200 flat rate for a "Tax Stamp" and it must be purchased for each suppressor.

About $400 for the product such as http://www.silencerco.com/?section=Products&page=Sparrow

I should add that only the rimfire moderators are very cheap. I pay around 170€ (232$) for centre fire rifle moderators. But there's no tax stamp to pay on top of that.

Still, in a few weeks I'll pick up a Stag Arms model 2T for 1900€ (2598$). And that's with discount :) Moderators may be cheap here, but we pay for our rifles...

I will be going with a suppressor soon and interested in the replies here.

Last year I experimented with subsonic rounds and a custom 28" barrel. Rumor had it that combo would be as loud as a pellet rifle. Not true.

But it was as least as half as loud as a 22LR in a 20" barrel. I doubt you could hear it at all a couple of hundred yards away.

Buy a used 1022 and rebuild it! I took my old 1022, installed an ER Shaw .920 barrel, bought volquartsen internals, did the bolt reshape job myself after watching a video on YouTube, added a nice thumbhole stock and a SWR Spectre II can. I now have a super accurate hunter/plinker that is deathly quiet and shoots subsonic .22 LR with no issues.

I have a Savage Mark II that works well for me.16 inch threaded bull barrel, tactical bolt knob, rail on top.short, handy and accurate, and not so long and unhandy when the can's on it.

I would expect that for quiet operation that a bolt rifle would be best. Semi autos like the Ruger 10/22 kick the bolt back and at least some of the pressure exits from the back along with the spent casing. So there's going to be some degree of sound coming out of the receiver. On the other hand a bolt action keeps all the pressure sealed in the barrel and forces it out the muzzle. So a suppressor is going to work more effectively by controlling ALL the gases.

Semi's do add some action noise, but it's not that much if you're using a polymer bolt buffer. I have a CZ 455 and a built 10/22 they are both lots of fun with the suppressor, and are both equally accurate (very). If you're only getting one, i'd opt for the 10/22 and then build it up how you want it.

Reshaping the bolt and adding a new buffer will quiet some of the action noise on the 1022, seemed to work well on mine.

Comment for the OP: Note that a CZ off-the-shelf bolt action will always be more accurate than an off-the-shelf 10/22. It is possible to increase the accuracy of the 10/22 but you need to spend some money on it.

You'll find a lot of comments on this forum about semi-auto ,22s shooting as accurately as CZ bolt actions. My own assumption here is that either these ,22 semi-autos are modified using upgraded parts, or else the shooter is not shooting their CZ bolt rifle to its fullest potential (i.e. lacking in either skill or not using decent ammo).

Semi-auto ,22s are great fun (I love mine!), but for hunting and best target accuracy, you can't beat a bolt action like a CZ. I also think a bolt action is a much better tool for teaching marksmanship. There is less temptation to blaze away and having to operate the bolt and chamber the next round makes the shooter think more about his/her hold and how to learn repeatability.

e.g. training:

10 rounds semi-auto = 10 practices of pulling the trigger and 1 practice for shooting hand positioning

10 rounds bolt-action = 10 practices of pulling the trigger and 10 practices for shooting hand positioning

I know those Volquartsen barrels are very accurate but most of them for the 10/22 go for almost $300. That's more than the 10/22 costs. Are there any other after market barrels that are good that don't cost as much. (I know, you usually get what you pay for!)

wow thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm going to go with the CZ.

My first favourite was a 10/22. I've looked into them and while it surely would be a fun project to customize one both guns and tuning parts are available but rather expensive here in Germany. I did some window shopping and would easily reach 800€+.

Also the points about the bolt action being more quiet and "educational" are well made.

thanks @ all.

Ruger's NEW .22LR American has reports of being very accurate and can compare to CZ455 American for accuracy with match/target ammo. Plus Ruger's American is about $150.00 less. Something worth considering.

OP, if you have any specific questions, check out the CZ section of rimfirecentral.com, a friendly and knowledgeable group of guys.

I also recommend a CZ.
You can then put the excellent ASE Utra Rimfire suppressor on it (mine was £80 here in the UK).

http://www.aseutra.fi/dual-rimfire-suppressor

Make sure you know what the barrel thread is on the CZ before you order the suppressor. If it is factory threaded the CZ is likely to be 1/2 x 20.
I think when I bought my suppressor it was 1/2 x 28 threaded but in the link for the dual suppressor above it says 1/2 x 20.

thanks for the further input. I'll check out rimfirecentral...

@tallpaul
Very nice rifle. That is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Did you get the picatinny rail and threaded muzzle directly or did you have a gunsmith put them on?
I have done some research and unfortunately can't find either directly from CZ.
