I have heard that by shooting .223 through an AR15 after using a 22 conversion bolt to fire 22lr that it helps to clean the 22lr dirt. Is that true? I think it is still pretty dirty. It is especially true when I add my 5.56 suppressor.

Maybe somewhat.

Realize that the .22 LR is actually the wrong caliber. The bullets are too small in diameter. They will work, but they aren't ideal. And because they are all either lead or copper-washed, they have room to make a mess. I guess shooting jacketed bullets will push out some of that fouling, but it won't be CLEAN clean.

I highly recommend getting a .22LR upper. I have a CMMG Sierra upper and it's fantastic. Since it operates on blowback, there is no gas tube fouling to worry about (it doesn't even have a gas port or tube). Accuracy and reliability is MUCH better as well. As a matter of fact, my CMMG is the most accurate off-the-shelf semi-auto .22LR I've ever encountered.

For the reason stated above, i don't like shooting 22lr through my 5.56/.223 barrels.

Get a dedicated upper or a S&W 15-22. I went with the 15-22.

I may consider an upper, I don't need another gun as it have a 10/22td with barrel threaded. I would just like to shot the AR in 22. I may look into selling a gun and putting money toward the upper.

I use an M261 adapter kit in my A1 with no issues. After shooting .22 LR I just clean as normal and it is ready to shoot 5.56. I don't see that shooting .22 LR is any dirtier than when I am shooting 5.56.

.22 LR projectiles "bump up" into the rifling. This is known as obturation. Unlike jacketed bullets that need to be close to the groove diameter the lead bullets make themselves fit. I get very good accuracy.

The twist rate of the A1 barrel is 1-12" and that also helps with the accuracy. If you have a newer 1-7" twist barrel than a dedicated upper will probably be a better option.

I've heard plenty of thoughts on why not to shoot a .22lr out of a standard upper. In my experience, which is simply anecdotal, I haven't had a single issue through thousands of rounds. The chamber should stay clean, as every adapter I've seen has a 223 to 22lr filler that fits in the chamber. The bore may get a little lead fouling, but a few rounds of 223/556 seem to deal with that well enough. I've also heard the adapters can clog the gas tube, but again, a few rounds of 223/556 now and then seem to keep that from happening. The accuracy I had was well within my plinking desires and worked just fine. It was never a benched rifle so I'm not sure how much more a dedicated solution would squeeze out.

Now, I have gone to a dedicated 22lr AR type platform, but that wasn't due to any flaw in the performance of a conversion. I simply rather not have to keep track of which bolt I brought with me and which optic setup I'd like to run. The 223/556 stays that and the M&P 15-22 stays 22lr. I also like to buy firearms and having two is better than one and a conversion kit in my book. If the budget limits you to a conversion kit, I haven't had any issues out of the CMMG. The JAC kits were made hit or miss and the customer service was worse yet.

I would NOT shoot 22lr through a 556 suppressor. It seems to clog a can up real fast and most 556 cans are sealed, making cleaning a bit tough. The chemical cleaners work well but are extremely toxic and hard to dispose in a legal and safe way. It's just not a situation I'd like to mess with. I'd either mess with springs/bolt weight until sub sonics worked, use hearing protection with HV 22lr, or buy a 22 Sparrow suppressor if you really wanted to use one on rimfire.

I have 22lr and a 223 suppressors. Both come apart for cleaning.

I will stick with my ar15 conversion and do high volume 22 with my 22/45 and 10/22.

Thanks

To echo what others have said, I've run thousands of .22's thru a conversion kit with exactly zero issues. I get decent accuracy in the 1:9 bbl. I usually don't run more than 2-300 in a session and always run a 20 round mag of .223 or 5.56 thru it when I'm done. Take it home and clean as normal......
