I am going to buy a cobra derringer and wonder if there is a signifigant difference in their ballistics through the 2.4 inch barrel. The 22 mag would be cheaper for sure.

If you are going to use it for SD, I would stay with the .32 acp for the reliability of center fire ammo, otherwise I don't know which has better balistics from a short barrel. LM
PS. as a side note; I had a .32 acp derringer but now it's a .32 H&R mag. derringer. Was easy to convert it, IMO to a more potent round for SD.

.32 ACP is larger in diameter and would be the better bet for SD. I own both but you won't see much ballistic difference from a short barrel in either. I would really suggest a larger caliber since your round count is severely limited and the caliber isn't going to make much difference in carry size.

I think that you'll get a little more oomph from the .32, because the effective barrel length is much greater (the .22WMR is quite long) and because the WMR is made for rifles, whereas the .32ACP is designed for little handguns.

That said, can't you get the same derringer in 9mm? Yes, the 9mm is compromised somewhat by the little barrel, but you can at least throw bullets with a little weight behind them, and 9mm is the cheapest autopistol round in the store, generally.

Derringers are not fun toys to put a lot of rounds through, shooting at targets. "Cheap to shoot" is not an important criterion. If you want that, get a NAA Mini in .22LR -- more fun, too.:) Not sure how many rounds the Cobra derringer is designed to shoot in its lifetime, either. It's probably not up there in 5 figures or anything.

i have a kel tec 32 that is terrific. I have a 45acp 1911.
I just want a derringer and I want the smaller one.
The velocity of each appears to be close to each other 850 fps to 950 fps out of a short barrel. The magnum might have a little more speed but a much smaller bullet.
Thanks

I have the Taurus 941 (4" barrel, steel, not the best concealment gun but just for reference) and I can tell you the report is right up there with my .38 sp. It makes a heck of a noise, way more than the little 40 grain .22 bullet deserves.. :) and it bucks pretty good too.. but I suspect the tiny little bullet just isn't that devastating for a human being.. the muzzle velocity is good, even in a revolver it's over 1500 fps, and the total delivered energy is good, but it's all penetration.. the bullet isn't big enough to do frag damage to any great extent.

That said, I'd much rather shoot a bad guy with this than with my wife's .22LR revolver. one critic says don't use .22 magnum for small game because it 'explodes small animals' and I suspect that's right!

I bought this for the cheaper ammo, a compromise between a bigger caliber and a .22LR... I get 50 rounds for less than $10 and the .22 mag is quite potent for what it is..

But for SD I"ll be carrying my .38 sp.
