I just bought my first gun about a month ago. It is a Ruger Mark III. I have just been able to start getting 10 rounds in the target at 50 feet with one hand. I started shooting with a group in a 22 league a couple of weeks ago. My question is, is it to early to go to a larger bore pistol? Should I wait and practice more or do you think it would be ok to step up? I did shoot my friends Walther P99 40 cal and thought it was a nice gun but I wouldn't something with that much kick.
Thanks,
Rusty

Move up when you are ready, and no sooner. Getting into a gun you aren't comfortable with will promote bad habits. That said, most full size 9mm's are very mild shooters.

Try the larger caliber and see how your groups are. If they worsen significantly. go back to the .22.

At any rate, keep the .22 pistol for inexpensive practice.

I was able to shoot a friends Glock 17 the other day and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the 9mm more than the 40. My goal is to start shooting in some compititions and with the 9mm I can stay on target a lot faster. I joined a club and they have a lot of things going on IDPA, Glock stile, Glock match ect. I don't know what brand I want yet but it will be a 9mm. I will always have the 22, they are to much fun. Thanks,
Rusty:)

Buy a .45 and suck it up. I learned to shoot pistols with my dad's 1911 when I was 9 years old and never shot anything but a .45 ACP or .45 LC until I was 15. I think you'll be alright, just give your self some time to learn to live with the recoil. .45's recoil is more like a steady push instead of the snappy wrist lash feeling of a .40
