22 revolvers

I understand Ruger makes a good revolver. As a matter of fact, the local gun store has one, I checked it out yesterday, it's single action tho.

EDIT; High Standard and American Heritage also, S&W probably too.

Use for what?

Good current production revos are S&W 617, 63, 317, Ruger Single Six and Bearcat. The 617 is the K frame, the 63 is the stainless J frame and the 317 is the aluminum J frame.

I don't trust Taurus. Their QA seems to be too inconsistent.

North American Arms make some interesting derringer style revolvers. Black Widow, Mini Master and The Duke ? are worth a look I think.

s@w 617 great gun i have 8 3/8 .great shooter .shooting silhouette since 1985.

The full answer to your question depends entirely on what you intend to do with your new-found revolver, of course. That being said, the Ruger Bearcat is an excellent .22 firearm that will provide you with many reliable years of quality service.

I know you asked in present tense and the answers provided are all excellent...

BUT... (if I may be allowed some PAST tense mfgs)

Do not overlook lightly used S&W K22, M17 (target shooting, hunting) or an M18 (4" barrel Combat Masterpiece). Only 6 shots in the old girls, but oh-so-much cheap shooting K-frame fun! A 34 or 63 (already mentioned) "Kit Gun" in the smaller J-frame for woods walking.

IF... IF, you can find one, a Ruger SP101 in .22? A stout, hefty little thing... last you a lifetime or two. IF... you can find one for sale. Scarce as hens teeth I tell ya (the one on GunBroker right now started w/ an ask price of $395).

Now all of those are DA plinkers. If SA or cowboy style thumb-cockers appeal to you, don't overlook older Colt New Frontiers or Peacemakers or Ruger Single Six or Bearcats (already mentioned).

I have a ruger it is a good gun and comes with a cylinder for .22 mag. which changes it up a bit

Dan Wesson makes one of the best double action 22 revolvers. It is built on their 357 frame and is absolutely a tank. Easy to shoot and very well made. They are quite cheap because DW has no real brand panache.

Ruger and Taurus if you're not wanting to spend a fortune. The Taurus is DA, but like most DA 22s, they tend to be pretty rough to shoot DA with. I have an old Rossi I like a lot, but Rossi no longer offers a .22 revolver.

If you wanna go Smith and Wesson, break out the check book and don't pay your mortgage next month. I'd get a Ruger auto before I spent the kind of money Smith wants for a friggin' .22, more accurate gun anyway. Saw a Ruger Mk3 yesterday for a tad over 300 bucks. Hard to beat unless you're looking for a kit gun, something smaller. I suppose a Freedom Arms in .22 could rival that Ruger's accuracy. I get 1" 50 yard groups with cheap bulk pack ammo with my Ruger, but those Freedom Arms revolvers are pretty amazing and line bored which helps 'em a lot.

I've thought a lot about getting an NAA mini master. I really don't know how well they shoot, but they're bigger than the other NAA stuff and have real sights and a good grip. As kit guns go, if the thing could hold a couple inches at 25 yards, it'd be pretty danged neat. :D

With no constraints on cost or action type the following 12 shooter looks pretty spiffy. We need someone to go first and report back for the rest of us.

Yes, those Kit Guns are superb. I just picked up a 34-1 for a song--and let me tell you, the thing is a lot of fun to shoot. I think the OP would be happy with any .22 Smith revolver.

my buddie has a little rosi in 22,, what a nice handgun I always wanted one, instead i bought a trooper in 22,, sold that, picked up a ruger stainless 22 1/2 barrel.I have a 2 power scope on it..I like to find a Rosi. I pick that right up.

ruger bearcat and ruger single six. i have them both. way to much fun to shoot. plus with the single six you get the .22mag cylinder.

I learned to shoot with a range rented Rossi 22. I think it was called a kit gun. Nice little revolver, but I bought a Ruger MK II.

I'm sure the new guns are fine, but being the old fashioned guy that I am I consider the classic revolvers made in the 1950s-1970s to be more desirable.

The K22 is maybe the quintessential 22 revolver.

Decent examples of all of the above can be found for $400-$500 if you look around and any will serve you well. These guns just have a bit more panache than do the more modern offerings, IMO.

Freedom Arms makes a dandy single aciton 22.

From current manufacture, my recommendation is a 4 or 6-inch Model 617.

From the past, I would look for a Colt Trooper Mark III, Colt Diamondback, Colt Officers Model Match, and Smith M17 or M18 if you want a full sized revolver.

If you want small, there is the Smith M63 or aiweight 317. Both are very good.
