Hi everyone. I'm new to this thread and would love some info on good .22 scopes. I'd like a scope that is parallax free, has a good field of view, and its versatile enough to do some target shooting/squirrel/varmint hunting and has tactical applications so I can get used to AR platforms and optics on those types of guns.( I'm going to get some kind of AR stock kit for the ruger 10/22...any recommendations on those would also be appreciated

Sure. An inexpensive, but very good .22 scope is the Bushnell .22 Rimfire 4x32 scope; $50. The parallax is set for 50 yards, which is about right for a .22 scope. If you want to spend a little more, a Nikon ProStaff Rimfire 3-9x40mm Riflescope is about $150.

Keep in mind that parallax is set for one distance on some scopes, but adjustable on others. Go visit OpticsPlanet.net, and do some shopping.

I recently bought a $30 Barska 3-9x32 Plinker scope and I love it. I've shot it out to 100 yards and seems pretty dead on. Can't say for sure since I wasn't shooting paper. Used it to cut down a tree at about 20 ft and blasting mud clumps on a hill at 30 ft, worked perfectly. Shot a squirrel in a tree at about 30 ft as well. I shot, one kill. Come to think of it, I don't think I've missed with this scope yet

Can't say much about the parallax or specifics, but for the price it's been phenomenal. I was actually very surprised how bright and clear the glass was.

Also it seems to handle general abuse well. I'm relatively rough with my equipment and it's held up so far.

that nikon rimfire looks pretty sweet and up my alley. I'd like to get one similar to that but slightly cheaper(100) if possible but i like the idea of having the nikon name(im just unsure on some of the quality on the lesser brand scopes) im sure many scopes would do the job but im looking for something i can grow with as i become a better shooter...i'd like to become proficient with a mil dot system or i'd like a cheaper scope that has cool features such as AO and get comfortable+skilled enough to where having those extra bells and whistles will do me some good

Bushnell 3-9x40mm full size scopes on both of my .22 rifles, they have been on there for years with no issues.

I have a Leapers Bug Buster compact 3-9x on my Marlin 795, I think it's $62 at Pyramyd Air.

It's got adjustable parallax, from like ten feet to infinity. Be advised, if you go with that, the eye relief is very short, I had to go with an offset mount on mine to put it closer to my eye.

my dad put a Tasco Pronghorn scope on my 10-22 for Christmas many years ago when I first started hunting-shooting. it is still going strong to this day. I don't know if this particular scope is even offered anymore, but I guess I would recommend their .22 scope.

thanks for the info about the AO scopes. I think the BEST way to describe what I'm looking for would be the simplicity and view of plain iron sights with some magnification thats good for like 150 yds.

This is an excellent scope with much better optics and mechanics than all of the scopes mentioned above with the exception of the Nikon Pro Staff (although I think it is a better scope than the Nikon) and depending on which Bushnell the gentlemen is referring to. In addition I believe it is made in Japan with all of the others (again with the exception of the two that I mentioned and I really am not sure where the Nikon is made) made in China. Personally I do not buy Chicom optics or any other product unless I am forced too by logistics. They offer a rimfire with a 32mm objective which is 10 dollars more and probably is parallax free at 50 yards as opposed to 100 yards. If you want to shoot out to 150 yards regularly then the one mentioned above would be preferable and cheaper.

I have managed to break a number of low-end 22LR scopes, and I have a bunch more that are noticably dimmer and less sharp than their more expensive bretheren. At this point, I have almost exclusively moved to Leupold rimfire scopes. The cost of buying cheaper and later finding out that an upgrade is desirable is more than saving and buying quality the first time.

I would not think poorly of a Sightron - I have several SIIs and think very very well of them - and I have had decent (but not stellar) luck with Nikons in general.

It should be noted that all magnified optics are going to exhibit some parallax errors. The question to ask is, 'at what distance is the scope calibrated such that the parallax is least noticable?'. For non-AO rimfire scopes, that distance is usually between fifty and seventy five yards and for non-AO centerfire scopes that distance is usually a hundred yards.

maybe i should re-phrase simplicity...in simplicity i mean find some settings that work and be able to stick with them mostly with little changes needed and the ability to reliably acquire targets quickly........finger adjustable(not tools) for the windage and elevation

Ok, once you sight in your scope on a 22 the odds of dialing anything in are going to be relatively low so whether your turrets are finger or coin adjustable is a mute point. However, the Sightron SI I mentioned, www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=882545, has finger adjustable turrets and plenty of magnification. If the cost exceeds what you are willing to pay and you must buy Chicom you do have other options better than your original choices. Konus is a definate step up and they make a 3-9x 40mm 30-30 Reticle Matte, www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=230931 and a 3-9x32 with AO, www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=182926. Both are 74.99 and have finger adjustable turrets. These scopes are about as simple as you can get other than a fixed power scope as mentioned above. Take your pick and make a decision.

Do you have a scoped CF rifle? Perhaps using that scope on your 22, and buying a BETTER scope for your CF hunting rifle would be a good choise?

I've done this in the past, and it's a good way to upgrade the scopes, where it's most needed.

I put a Tasco 3-9x40 on my 10/22 The scope cost $34.95. I've used Tasco scopes and binoculars for 45 years and have never had a problem. I've also used many other kinds of high end optics, Leupold, Nikon, etc., and the only difference I noticed was the price.

Hmmm. Not a great idea imho. Chicom junk. When they were made in Japan they were a good reliable product.

preferably 100 bucks but i'm willing to got to 150 if there's a scope that's heads and tails above the others.

Take a look at the Mueller APV 4.5-14 for $150.
Highly recommended at Rimfire Central. I believe it is Adjustable Objective. I have a Savage MKII TR with a Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40. Got it for $150 at my local sporting goods store. Very Clear, but parallax is set at 100 yards, because it is a centerfire scope. Unless you're shooting Competition, it really doesn't matter IMO.

All 3 of my 10/22's have nikon's on them, The rifle i usually carry with me when checking traps has been dropped a few times and it still shoots straight as the day i sighted it in,, pretty sold on them nikon's

I went to Walmart & got the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X30 shotgun hunter for $100. Not too bad. It's doing ok so far. It is on a Ruger 77/22. I looked on the bottom (underside) and it is stamped "MADE IN THE PHILIPPINES" not a communist country last time I checked, and hopefully not junk.
