Need a cheap Rifle for .22 cal CB Shorts..
Marlin, and Savage bolt actions say ".22 long rifle only" right on the barrel.
The closest thing I have found is a "Chipmunk" it is pink and Too small.

I own a couple pump action .22's and a few henry lever .22's.
These cycle and fire cb shorts just fine.

A Marlin 60 or really most tube feed .22's will fire shorts. The semi auto you will have to cycle each shot but they usually feed just fine.

Bolt rifles just feed them one at a time by hand.

I fire Shorts and Longs out of an old Remington bolt action all day, why are the Marlins and Savages Long Rifle only?

The key is to have a bolt or lever action with tubular magazine, not box magazine. Then, they'll feed fine.

Marlin makes an XT22 with a tubular magazine, and they advertise that it will work with shorts, longs, and long rifle. I don't think Savage does.

Marlin's 39A is a beautiful gun, but not cheap, and it will hold 25 Shorts!

Pumps and levers are the "goto" guns for shorts. I picked up a used remington pump for my dad to dispatch rabbits eating mom's flowers, cheap and holds something like 20 shorts. I use 22 long CBs in a suppressed 77/22 they feed just like LR, dry firing makes more noise as the brass smushing takes the "ding" out. Longs also work in semiautos but you have to cycle by hand.

Lots of old single shot bolt rifles out there that would work well for .22 CBs. I picked up a Sears Model 1 (Sears-branded Winchester 121) for this purpose for $100 a couple years ago.

Check pawn shops and classified ads (especially local gun sites if your area has them)--I see similar guns for sale cheap frequently.

My grandfather just gave me a Winchester Model 62A which is a pump action rifle. It'll shoot 22 shorts, longs and long rifles. It'll hold 18 22 shorts. It's old but man is it a blast to shoot!

My Henry will feed anything i've put in it, from CB shorts, on up through Stingers and Vipers. I in fact, bought it to use with CB's, and i've fired a lot of them through it!

Back to the question of "22 LR only": It has to do with how the cartridges stack up in the clip. Single shots and tubular magazine guns do not have this issue.

I do, however, have a Ruger SP101 that stipulated that one should not use 22 Shorts, I made the mistake of feeding it 50 rounds of 22 CBs make on a short case. The CBs deposited a bunch of crud in the cylinder chambers that caused 22 LR cases to be stick for loading and extraction. It was a mess to clean out.

Aguila Colibri and Super Colibri CB caps are all loaded in a long / long rifle length case.
Never seen anything yet they won't feed in.
Course, they don't have enough power to cycle a semi-auto is all.

CCI makes both Short CB caps and LR length CB caps.
I prefer Aguila, as the CCI's are too dang loud.

Quiet

If you are concerned with the report,go with at least a 24" barrel.
I shoot CB longs in a Remington 581 w/24" tube and it makes less noise than a pellet gun.:scrutiny:

If you look, a 22 Long CB is quite a bit shorter than a 22 LR. I think that is because the CB bullet is actually a short bullet, not a LR bullet. I tried a 22 Long CB out of my CZ 452 and I had a shotgun pattern group at 25 yards. I think this is because my chamber is pretty tight.

I'd like to try a rifle that is made to shoot shorts, longs, and LR. That would be a lot of fun to pick up one of those Henry lever action 22's because I have a Winchester 94 30-30. I'm sure those Marlin bolt tube rifles that will shoot shorts are pretty accurate too.

This goes back to the OPs question. Most all tube feed rifles, single shots, and revolvers are DESIGNED to shoot shorts, longs, and long rifles - even if they are just marked 'long rifle.' There is just no way, though, to make any .22 rifle accurate with all three types of ammo unless it is a 'switch' barrel rifle. I guess this would be easiest with something like the Thompson-Center Contender. Their custom shop does offer a barrel listed as for '.22 short match.'

The problem with accuracy is due to the twist rate of the rifling, not so much the chambering. Most .22s are built with a 1-16" twist, made to best stabilize long rifle bullets (33 to 40 grains). Shorter (hence lighter) bullets like in shorts and CBs do not do well with this twist. They prefer a twist rate of 1-20" to 1-24" to shoot accurately. Most shorts and CBs shoot a 29 grain bullet. I think Aguillas are 20.

Over the years, many rifles and pistols have been chambered specifically for the .22 short. I think some international handgun competition is done with .22 short chambered guns. Right now, some custom Ruger 10/22s are short chambered and rifled. I have seen the parts available to convert them yourself and they function just fine with the new components. The trouble with have a gun specifically chambered for the .22 short is that not only is the twist too slow for long rifles, but the chamber is too short for them to fit. I suppose one could chamber a gun with a long chamber and a twist rate for .22 shorts, but then it would not be accurate with long rifle shells.

So, in end, we have many rifles rifled and chambered with long rifle specs than can shoot shorts and CBs. They work well, just not as accurately as some of us would want. They do fine, though, on close cans, rabbits and squirrels as long as you keep appropriate expectations. I shoot CBs and Aguillas out of a several of my .22s and find it fun.

Find yourself a nice clean Remington 550. It'll shoot S,L & LR, even mixed in the tube. When it's clean and lubed it'll shoot and cycle 22 short CB's. CCI Target shorts are nearly as quiet as CB's, too.
