I think I'm going to get a Tikka T3 Lite topped with a Nikon 4x. What do you guys use your .223 bolt guns for other than just plain fun?

prairie dogs, coons, rabbits, coyotes, skunks, and possums is what i use a 223 for.

....and plinking, letting novices shoot, kids like the low recoil, deer, bobcats, in another 12 years I'll add "teenage boys" to the list.

Smoke

Winchester Mod 70 "Coyote" .223 Rem.

I've got a Savage .223 bolt gun that sees alot've time as my primary hunting rifle. 3-9x40 with a 12x42 in the plans for some better performance at 100+ yards. Does an excellent job on pretty much anything below a buck.

Great choice in rifle. I have the T3 Lite Stainless/Synthetic in .223 and love it. It is a greater shooter and definitely shoots much better than I am capable of. As for its uses, groundhogs, coyote, and any other game that is smaller than a deer.

As for your scope choice, depending on its intended use, you may want to go with a higher powered variable -- you may find yourself shooting out of the range of the 4X.

I have a ruger 77 in .223 Its a fun little rifle, very light, accurate, and no real recoil. One of my favorate bolt guns.

I've got a Savage 12BVSS. It shoots the lights out. I replaced the trigger with the sharpshooter trigger. It's definitely not a carry around gun. I used to have a CZ527 .223 and I absolutely loved the single set trigger and the removable magazine. They didn't have a heavy barrel version at the time so continuous fire made my groups start to open up as the barrel heated up. If I was in the market for another .223 I'd seriously look at the CZ527 with the heavy barrel. The single set trigger is excellent for off the bench work. I'd get a really high powered scope. Aim small hit small....or at least that's what I like to attempt.

The other .223 I have is a Mini-14 that I"ve added an Ultimak rail and a Hakko Tacpoint. It's a pretty small and handy package. I'm waiting for my AK muzzlebrake from Bushmaster.

I'm a highpower nut, I use my tikka 223 for that.

My Sako Model 75 is used for coyotes, groundhogs and porcupines. I take it to the range to put 5 shots into very tiny groups.

It also is hauled out to show a very nice piece of walnut (I got lucky).

Atek- I gotta that's one smooth action on your gun, after the shoot a while ago. How did you get it like that?

If you want a heavy 9-10 lb heavy varmint type gun The Rem, Ruger, Savage, or Win all should be pretty good. Remington probably has the most accessories available.

If you want a lighter rifle, the Rem Light Varmint, or whatever they call it now is also a good bet.

The single set trigger is pretty cool on the CZ's, though I think I'll get a Remington, myself. The .223 is available in lot of different configurations, in many different guns.

Heck, in CA you can build up a FAB-10 with a match upper receiver, and have a pretty accurate 10 shot autoloader.

For some more money take a look at the Cooper Arms rifles - they are wonderfully accurate bolt action single shots. I want one myself in .221 Fireball, which I figure will be the ultimate no excuses rifle.

You take up handloading yet, Skunky? The .223 really comes alive with choice handloads.

flat shooter, I love the Tikka actions (it's like the poor man's Sako) and the 223 is a great round if you don't hunt. Add that with an AR, and you have good rifle logisitcs.

that CZ-527 Varmint w/ Kevlar Stock looks very tactical...

why? well I'm trying to justify that to myself right now because in Ohio you can't hunt deer with a rifle. This might have something to do with the distinct lack of long distance +100yrd rifle ranges in my area too. But there's a real coyote problem just to the south of columbus and our legislators are thinking of putting a 50 dollar bounty on them. I'm not really into hunting yet (vegetarian), but I'd like to count myself among Spike Spiegel and Boba Fett someday and call myself a Bountyhunter.

and bolt guns even sound tactical...

I loved the Tikka I played with at the shop. Buttery smooth, like my Beretta.

I think I may get the Lite Stainless to go with the twotone Berettas.

Not that I would, but this is

I really like my 10FP Savage in .223 a lot. I've got maybe $600 invested in the whole rig and it shoots like a house a fire. Personally, I'd buy something with the fastest twist you can get your hands on, unless you're intending not to shoot past 200 yards or so and/or plan on sticking with bullets less than 69 gr. or so. A 1:9 twist like the Savages and the 700P Series Remingtons have will let you shoot things like the 75 Hornadys and maybe the 77 Sierras.

Mac Tilton in Nevada set it up for me. It came just like that out of the box. Only alteration I made was tool-dipping the bolt knob to speed it up in the rapids.

I'm thinking about working up a hot JLK 80 gr. load and fooling around at 600+ yards.
