sure why not , I was reading oklahoma game regulations and it states enything legal for deer , well a 223. 55 gr sp is legal for deer here .So what do you thank . I say, what the heck ill give it a go lol.:)

NO im not, I belive a 223 would drop a elk like a bad habit.Whithin 200 yrds of course.

Or the heart. Shotplacement matters more than caliber. Not my first choice, but easily doable.

Elk in Oklahoma? If you can find one go for it!

Southwest corner of Oklahoma.

They also roam on some of the adjoining land, including Ft Sill. I personally know of a Marine LT who had his career come to an abrubt end when he did a fire mission on a herd of elk that wandered onto the range.

I know of a guy in Montana that took an elk with a 22-250. When he skinned the critter he found his spent round just below the skin on the other side of the elk from the shooting side.

Never would have thought of OK for elk. With a very familiar rifle and a close enough range, it could be done. I don't think it practical or fair, but if it's legal and that's the only rifle you have, and you are super good with it, then I don't see too much wrong with it. :uhoh:

Me personally, I would do the elk a favor and buy a larger caliber. I would still hunt with you if you were using a .223, you might just make it run to me for a clean kill. ;)

BTW: I would use a Barnes TSX or Swift A-frame in the heaviest weight made that shoots accurately if this is truly something you are considering. Good luck.

You might be able to hit it right in the boiler room at 200 yards, but with a 223 and 55 gr you'll be followin blood for a mile and then the recovery begins. I think it can be done but IMHO it would be unethical not to mention make for a lot of work. At the end of the day are you going take the advice that you get here or just do it? I personally wouldn't shoot anything larger than a coyote with .223,but thats just me. Have fun. I wouldn't though.

I was wondering when someone would bridge the gap from deer with a 223 to elk/moose etc. Seriously, enough is enough. I will be the first to stand up for the 223 as a deer killer, but elk? If that's all you've got and it's legal then give it a go. You're not going to impress anyone, but hopefully you get the job done quickly for the elk's sake.

well put marksman. I wouldn't be terribly upset to see somebody take a deer w/ .223 but you are talking about 400-600 pounds difference. Poor elk. Anybody that has to ask doesn't have the confidence to get the job done anyhow.

Let's see, which do I value more? Getting a clean, efficient kill even at longer ranges or with less than perfect shot placement, since I'm well aware the damn things move, bullets angle off ribs, etc, or being able to thump my chest on the internet saying I killed a big bad elk with an widdle tiny .223.

There are Inuit that supposedly use .22 Hornets on Polar BEar with great success, but I'll use something larger, thank you.

A perfect heart/lung shot should kill an elk. A perfect one.

The only thing is we nearly never get perfect shots, do we?

If it's that or starve, and all I have is a .223... sure. Otherwise I'd just bring more gun.

I was going to move this to hunting, but...

You must be kidding. Have you ever seen an elk? A 25-06 is considered by most to be too light for elk.

Listen folks, we have a responsibility not only to ourselves, but to gun owners in general, not to make statements like this.

Closed for utter stupidity.
