Anybody know of good, high quality ammo in either of these calibers that shoots clean and won't foul up an AR? I have been using Wolf, but have decided that due to the laquer, it would make poor SHTF ammo. It is great for practice ammo, but that is as far as I trust it. I need some good stuff that if I needed to, I could use it without worrying if each shot was going to jam me.

What do you use in your .223/5.56 that you would trust your life to?

I only trust my guns when they are clean !! It doesn't matter ,if the ammo leaves lots of residue just clean it more often. If the ammo jams in a clean gun then throw it out.

I found that Wolf is not good in the accuracy department in my rifles. I keep Q3131 or XM193 under some custom sintered .223 frangible rounds in the HD carbine. The HB carbine (scopped) has Black Hills 68 match ammo in the 20 round mags.

Winchester Q3131, American Eagle 55 gr Soft Points

Q3131 for the M4gery. Soft points for the PDW AR pistol to give it a little more oomph:evil: ! I don't like Wolf anymore because it is noticably underpowered. If Wolf is going through my AK, then who cares, it's cheap:D!

XM193 or XM855 (identical to the military loads) can be bought at most online ammo retailers. I plink with Georgia Arms .223 reloads, but keep a stash of XM193 for "serious" ammo.

For plinking, I think AIM surplus has been selling a couple different types of .223 surplus lately. Other have it as well I am sure.

My two primary Home Defense 30 round magazines are loaded with 75 grain Hornady TAP. The rest of my magazines are loaded with Q3131.

Somekid, take a look at this link. It's a list of ammo vendors and their current prices.

XM193 and Winchester Q3131A are highly favored for an ammo stash. They are getting harder to find these days though. (stay away from the XM193PD)

For range day plinking/casual target shooting, I've been using standard commercial Winchester 55gr. .223 from Walmart. I haven't been seeing it around lately though, maybe it's just a dry spell.

For high quality ammo and target shooting, you can't beat Black Hills remanufactured ammo. It's just as good or better as anybody's new ammo, but has been loaded in once fired brass.

Thanks for all the responses. I ordered from Ammoman, and purchased XM193. (Lake City, but packaged by Federal according to them.)

$149 for 500 rounds. Knowing Ammoman, it will arrive sometime in the middle of next week. If I get it before Thursday, I will take some of it to the range and see how my AR likes it.

Bass Pro Shop occasionally carries Winchester Q3131.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of Q3131 showing up in local gun shops and gun shows. Kind of expensive tho, $250/1000rds. Unlike a lot of the XM193 I'm finding, the Q3131 seems to be of very recent manufacture.
