I've started loading .223 rem and am not happy with the imr 4895 powder that i've been using for other calibers. If I use the recommended charge that is shown in my "cook book", it fills the case completly full.
Any suggestions for a better match?
H4895 has always been a great choice IMO for use in the 223. So are BenchMark, W748, H322, Varget, actually the cartridge is so easy to please it is harder to find a powder that doesn`t work then one that does.
BTW I prefer to use a powder that fills the case to slight compression if at all possible.
IMR 8208 xbr, BLC-2 and RL 10x all work good for me. (plus a few more) I like the 8208 for the AR's. My thoughts are if I've shot enough to heat the chamber up much shooting p-dogs, and there's always a round in the chamber, the heat shouldnt cause pressure to rise as much as it does with other powders. Plus its verrry accurate!
I only shoot 69s and 77s out of my AR. I also use a lot of Reloader 15 powder, but I just got a new barrel, so I don't know what I'll be using next week.
The "classic" .223/5.56mm powder is H335. It produces clean and accurate ammo. I also recently gave Varget a try with a 55gr bullet and was amazed at the accuracy. I shot several sub 1/2 MOA groups @100 yards with that ammo. The smallest group was 0.314", not bad IMO...
I love Varget in the .223. The only other powder that comes close in accuracy in MY two rifles is BL-C 2. That doesn't mean it will give that performance in YOUR rifle.
I've been using H4895 in my 223 Contender lately, but if you take a consensus on powder use, especially in AR style rifles, H335 is a good consistent performer. It measures quite well being a ball powder. Ramshot Tac and X-terminator are good too, and are a bit cheaper than H335.
For heavier rounds (69gr+) I use Reloader 15 with good success. For rounds lesser in weight/length than those, I have been using Varget. So basically the 1/7 barrels get the former, the 1/9 barrels get the latter. This has been my experience on what has worked for me.
