.223 rumor

It's not really that the ammo isn't available.
It's just that you see less of it and it costs way more than it once did.
I'm still considering the AR build (if I can afford it). My plan would be to buy some good stuff to keep around and then not touch it. Then buy a few boxes at a time for range use but go mostly with handloads.

yep, reloading is the way to go...prices are so ridiculous that i'm trying to figure out if there is a way to reload .22 long.

Reload, no worries.

I still think pound for pound, its probably one thee cheapest modern rounds around.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you have the coin to build a rifle, you should have the coin to shoot it. ;)

As I understand it, the cost of the raw matierials is going up which has influenced the cost & availability more than the war. I've also been told to expect another 15 to 20 percent increase in '08 too

You are 100% right. Look at the cost or raw goods and you will see why ammo is going up. You can buy ammo all day long it just costs more. Reloading components are going up at the same rate.

The military does not use the same factories that the commerical market does. It is all about the cost of raw goods not the war.

Yes they do. A search in General Discussion of threads from the past couple of years where we've discussed various civilian manufacturers getting contracts for military ammunition.

The only military small arms ammunition plant still operating is Lake City in Independence MO current;y being run by Alliant Tech Systems for the military. The other plants that were in mothballs were sold as part of a way of spending the Peace Dividend back in the 80s. Olin Winchester is making quite a bit of small arms ammunition for the military. Black Hills is the only company making M262 ammunition.

It's a combination of the war and the higher prices of commodities.

223 brass is getting hard to find. Cabelas has it for $16.99 right now. I ordered 200. My 223 rifles are a Savage bolt and Remington pump so they don't throw brass all over Hell and half of Georgia.
