.223 Shortage?

Is there a .223 shortage currently? Varminting loads are still on the shelves, but commercial plinking and surplus ammunition is nowhere to be seen.

with the prices going up I sure can save a bunch on reloading the .223

We can save money as long as the prices stop going up, didn't 1,000 primers sell for $19.00 or $20.00 just two or three years ago?

Just try to find some 55 or 62 grain FMJ bullets. Almost impossible here as of late, new or pulled surplus. I lucked into 2K of pulled M855s at Wideners the other morning, it was almost like winning the lottery!

There's no shortage, and there isn't going to be.

When ammo companies load ammo, they load in batches. When the current "batch" starts to sell out, they retool their machinery and load another "batch." Just like we handloaders do.

Sometimes, any particulay caliber becomes a little scarce, or actually "less abundant" just before a new batch hits the shelves.

If you're having trouble finding cheap .223, wait a couple of months, it will be abundant again very shortly.

BTW, this is a good reason to buy in bulk.

True, even the surplus pulled bullets are near impossible to find. There's always Ebay, but they're anti-gun scum and most of the sellers there want outrageous prices for lousy 200 bullet packs of unsized 62gr bullets.

I was told that there was no more surplus ammo because of the war....I still think it was military demand & a little capitalism working in the recent boost in ammo prices

I dont know if you have Academy Sports & Outdoors stores in your area, but they have brass-cased 55 grain .223 Rem FMJ and SP boxes for about $7 a box. Its "Monarch", their house brand. It works great, FMJ for plinking and soft point for hunting.

I bought out their entire stock last time I was in the store, as thats the cheapest I've seen locally.
