What are my choices for auto in 223? Other than AR-15 and Ruger Mini-14?
AR's are so darn $$$. Ruger's are getting so darn $$$.
Any decent AR's under $700

7.62x39
What choices are there for auto in 7.62? Other than SKS and AK-47?
Why all the talk about shortage of ammo?

There are a bunch of new semis in .223 being introduced this year; but if you don't like AR prices, you won't like the prices on most of the new entries.

Are any of these decent for accuracy? I want it to work as a varmint rifle....as well as my "just in case" weapon. I'm hoping for something with more accuracy than that reported on Ruger Mini-14's.

Nothing any cheaper? Maybe I'm going to be stuck with an SKS...as poor as I am.

Northslope Nimrod
I bought a new Saiga .308 with 2 8rd mags for $380 nice shooter lower recoil then I expected .I have ordered a Saiga in 7,62x39 .The cost should be under $270. with shipping.Should be here in a couple weeks or I can go to the local pawn shop the same rifle is $325.They also have a new Saiga .223 about $280.
The 7.62 has 10 rd mags (found 2 30 rd aftermarket mags with a warrenty)
The .223 only has 10 rd mags
The only down side to the Saiga is the scope mount is extra so I ordered a side mount + a reciver mount with rings to see which one works best both cost $19.95 each
I have a AK47 that loves Wolf dislikes USA made bullets
A Sks that has only shot Wolf
A Mini-30 that hates Wolf loves WWB or other USA made bullets
When my Saiga 7,62 comes in I will sell my Mini-30 and go with the cheap Wolf ammo for my 3 7,62x39 rifles

Side question.

If in SHTF scenario..... Which caliber would you rather have? .223 so you can possibly find some local ammo? OR 7.62 because it is so cheap you can just stock pile it? .308 is quite a bit more $$, correct? Similar to 30-06?
Could sources of 7.62 dry up for whatever reason?
Ignore the ballistic benefits.
Anyone else have opinions on Saiga's?

In a SHTF scenario the only supply of ammo you can count on is your own. Yeah, scrounging ammo would be a nice *if* you can find any but don't count on it. I used to be a 5.45/7.62 fan until I realized that most of that ammo is imported and all it would take is a stroke of a pen to cut that off permanently. Big stockpiles already? Always a good thing but how much training are you going to do before the SHTF if you cannot replace the ammo you shoot? The 5.56/.223 is not my favorite round but at least it's currently available in large quantities domestically and having extra on-hand gives you an excellent barter material if needbe.
Saigas: I used to own a couple of Saiga shotguns and loved 'em to death except for the rarity & price of the 8rd mags. The only problems w/the Saiga rifles (IMHO) are that factory hicap mags are very pricey/rare and you have to modify the rifle to reliably take other mags. Plus, if you want anything other than the factory "sporter" stock (ie: std AK stock or folder) then you have to modify the rifle to comply w/the 922r 10 foreign parts count.
That's why I went with the Mini. Again, not my favorite rifle but at least its problems are easily/inexpensively corrected while leaving the innards intact. Just my $.02 worth...

My SU-16 has been 100% reliable, its easy to clean and maintain and it gives my friend's bushmaster a run for its money. Its compact, lightweight and inexpensive. Its not an "almost AR" the only things they share with an AR are the bolt lugs and the magazines. Its more akin to an SKS than an AR to me.

I had the choice of an SU or an AR, I chose the SU due to its size. Not at all regretting it, six coyotes and a few thousand rounds later I'm still impressed.

What model Kel Tec is that?

The C or CA? Every once in a while I see one in a gun shop here for around 640$, which may not be bad for California.

Its the folder, with a CA stock. I spent -forever- trying to find a CA model, so I bought a Charlie and found somone who wanted to trade.

If I sing the praises of nothing else, its that Phantom. Love the "teeth" and the ability to throw a silencer on it if they were legal here.

I second the KelTec SU16.

My SU16C that can be fired with the stock folded.

This look cool ...I like keltecs, I want this rifle above, and if presented with a decent deal I may have one someday. I have had 2 keltecs -- the p32 is the coolest little gun ever.

but -- my 5.56x45 is a SAR3, brl twist at 1-8.25 -- 75 gr. or higher will break the brass in half -- about 5 out of 50 rds shot, and it isnt accurate enough to bother...:scrutiny: So I stick with 55 or lower and the highset I go is 62 gr, it shoots SS109 O.K. depending on brand.

I (heart) this rifle -- it looks so 70's to me! But its the RSA trigger is what makes this thing stand out when shooting, that stuffs like a varmit rifles trigger.:)

Armalit AR180B sells for $650. I have shot it. It is simple, rugged, and reliable. You won't be dissappointed.

Last I heard there were problems w/the 180B's polymer receiver breaking at the pivot hinge and that's specifically *not* covered by Armalite's warranty. Has that changed?

Most SU-16s go for about 300 bucks

Where is this glorious place where SU-16s can be had for so little?:) Do you mean a used SU-16? The cheapest I have seen a new SU-16A go for is around $425.

Su-16's for $300, where? I have the su-16a which I got a good deal on from Bud's gunshop but it was closer to $500 than $300 after shipping and transfer. Mark

St.Louis arms. I asked on prices of more than a few peices, the SU-16A was I believe(dont qoute me) 330..ish? My Su-16C was like 390. Mike who runs the place, always takes care of me.

Any decent AR's under $700
For my first AR, I bought a Colt SP1 upper for $180, a used Colt bolt/carrier/CH for $125, and a DPMS assembled lower for $250 complete with stock, buffer, and spring. Total for that build was a whopping $555.
