Foxchase, you anywhere around DFW Texas? I'll give you enough ammo to load a couple mags.

Since I often carry a NAA in .22 Mag, that is my vote, and I cannot imagine the .25 ACP being better than results from .22 Mag. That said, lesson learned, don't shoot up all your good ammo. :)

Tough call, but I think I'd go with the .22WMR

Normally I say that .25 is better because it's center fire vs rimfire, but the nice thing about the DA wheel gun is if one round is a dud you can just pull the trigger again.

I actually think that .25 ACP is a better round than most people give it credit for.

25 acp is a well document poor stopper

I often wonder how much of this is due to the quality of the pistol involved. I can see how a really cheap .25 pistol with an over-sized bore could result in reduced velocity and power.

I have chronographed my Beretta 950 "Jetfire" (an excellent pistol by the way) at just under 1,000 FPS (with the lighter 35gr bullets, the 50gr is a bit slower). I have a hard time believing that this would just "go around" someone's skull.

Edited to add:

I would also say that I'd use FMJ's for either round. I think FMJ makes more sense for anything smaller than a .380 ACP. For a while I would carry my .25 loaded with Hornady XTP hollow points but I've since decided that wasn't very smart and moved back to Winchester FMJs...

Would be very interesting to see some tests. This page was interesting:

But seems like the velocity should have been at least 100 FPS faster than that (based on my own limited tests and experiance with the round). Wonder if he got a bad batch of ammo or something.

Isn't .25 ACP about as potent as .22LR? The .22WMR should be significantly more effective provided you either have a pistol with enough barrel length or a cartridge that is less affected by a short barrel.

If you live near me I will give you a box of 9mm and you can pay me whenever.

I picked up 3 boxes of Tula at Walmart last night for $10.97. It's FMJ but it will probably be better than the .25.

Not only is the .22 mag a decent self defense round, so is the .22lr. In fact, a Ruger auto loaded with a full magazine of .22lr is about the deadliest combination a person could want. Out of the single action revolver, the .22wmr is an exceptional drawer gun. It can enter the body in the upper torso and end up in the intestines. In fact, I know a guy who was shot with a .22lr from a mile away out of a handgun and almost died from it! He said it felt like a wicked wasp sting. Luckily, someone got to him and got him to the hospital, where he came to. As for the .25acp, I've heard many people denigrate it; however, if I had a nickel for every news story I've seen where some bad guy was shot once or twice with a .25acp and ended up dead, I'd be in the money! And the Beretta is tough to beat. If it were being introduced today as a novelty gun, I think they'd be flying off the shelves.

Ammo is tough to get these days, so I wouldn't go shooting it all. You should always have enough ammo to get through a week or two of an emergency, such as a shutdown of services. I don't know how long the ammo situation is going to last, but I don't think it will be forever.

I had a cop friend who was shot with a 25ACP at about 5'... He had a leather jacket on, and didn't even realize he had been shot, until his partner noticed a hole in his jacket. He looked inside, and pulled a "thin" note pad out of his shirt pocket, it had a 25 cal. bullet stuck in it!

I've shot and also experimented quite a bit with 25 factory and reloads, including cast bullets, for defence make MINE a 22WMR!!

I'd go for the Ruger LCR in .22 mag. I think it's a better SD round than a .25 ACP and have shot and like both calibers.

I'd add that I have two Gun Buddies who are (were) ER doctors in major bad places to be ER doctors and both of them told me they have seen plenty of guys killed with .22 lr and .25 ACP.

As one other forumite here says: Accuracy is King and Penetration is Queen.

Shoot the one you feel confident with, I feel comfortable with either caliber. I often carry a NAA 22 mag with the 22 lr cylnder as become. A small pistol is better than the big handgun you leave at home.

I carry a NAA Mini in 22 MAG, daily, usually in addition to a sub compact .45 ACP. I call it my "everywhere" gun, sometimes I almost forget it"s there.

Here in SW Floriduh, we don't wear a lot of clothes, so hiding even a compact .45 can be a challenge some days. The 22 MAG easily lurks in shorts and a T shirt. The berreta, not so much.

I have put down everything from pests to injured livestock with the .22 MAG. I consider it a viable self defense weapon, close in, primarily, after after I have already screwed up and let an assailant/attacker get way too close... (I call it my "let go of my shirt, you SOB" gun)

IMHO, the .25 can kill, the .22 MAG, in a similar sized package, is better at it. Distance performance goes up as the bore get's over .30 and closer to 1/2 inch, but so does bulk.

My favorite weapon is the one I have at hand when I need it. I'm anxious if I have less than 2 full reloads in hand, for the weapon (s) I'm carrying, but that's just the way I move thru life...

If you allow your significant other to restrict or reduce your ability to protect and defend your family, (for whatever reason or purpose) perhaps you have bigger problems than a shortage of ammunition. (Just one man's opinion)
