Hi,

Does anyone know if you can get a 24" barrel for the Mossberg 590?

Here in the UK we have this ridiculous law that states a shotgun barrel cannot be shorter than 24". As a result the dealer who sold me my 590 had to braze a four and a half inch muzzle break on the end of the barrel to make it legal. It is assumed if it were any shorter it would be to easy to conceal and that might tempted me to go out and rob a bank or something like that.

This is all fine and dandy except I cant now fit a front sight such as the LPA SG6 http://www.lpasights.com/catalog-shotgun.html and instead I will have to get a sight fitted by a gunsmith, re-blued and presumably re-proofed as well.

To make matters worse they didn't even put it on straight as it is about ten degrees out. I know it's not much but it just bugs me every time I see it.

I've been looking around on the Internet for a replacement muzzle brake as well but I'm having no such luck with that ether so if anyone knows a retailer that would be most welcome.

Regards,

Steve...

Steve,

Here is the solution to your problems, The Mossberg 835 barrels will fit in your "5-shot mag tube" 590. The barrel is "overbored" to a 10GA at the muzzle. If you have the 7 shot mag tube, then this won't work....

Mossberg makes a 24" barrel for the 835, although they don't list it for sale seperately on their web-site...

You will probably have to get in touch with Mossberg and speak with their "export" people, since I have no idea what is involved in shipping a shotgun barrel to the UK..

In the end, it may be less expensive to sell your 590 and buy a 24" barreled shotgun....

Regards,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I have the nine shot 590 so the barrel you suggested will not fit my particular model.

I got the 590 to do practical shotgun competitions, I'm not sure what you call it over there but its where you have to shoot metal plates situated round an assault course against the clock.

Incidentally I've noticed you can buy replacement barrels for all the other Mossberg shotguns except the 590, or so it seems. Am I just being naive or is there some special reason for this?

Regards,

Steve...

The 590 and 835 use a cap over the magazine tube pushing back against the ring of the barrel, much like the Remington 870. The 500 line, for the most part, has a magazine tube capped and threaded down the inside of the cap. The 500 barrels have a screw-in bolt mounted under the barrel. The 500 come in two magazine lengths 6 round and 8 round (this is total count, magazine plus chamber). Barrels are differnt from one length to the other in the 500.

I don't know if the parts are available for you over in the UK, but...

You could change out the magazine tube for a Model 500 mag tube, then you would be able to use any of the model 500 barrels....

You can get the 500 stuff here quite readily. Over priced as usual, what you tend to pay in $ with pay in £, which at the moment is about twice as much.

But that is a good idea which I had not considered. It would mean loosing the bayonet lug but I wasn't planning on using that anyway.

Thanks for the advice...
