It's probably been discussed on here before but I can't seem to find it. I have a couple of Axis in .223. Had trigger jobs put in and they are tack drivers. The next time these things go on sale for under $300 bucks with scope I'm thinking about a .243. I don't need another .243 but I want one just because the other Axis are one hole shooters. My question is: Does anyone own one in .243 and what factory fodder does it like? It would be nice if it shot something cheap as I don't reload.

I have one. Bought it a few weeks ago. Sadly, every time I've tried to shoot it's been windy so I can't really tell you how it shoots, and it probably won't see much factory ammo. I'm going to try to take it out on Friday and I'll let you know how it goes. My .308 Axis is a one hole shooter with handloads.

I'm using 100gr BTSP in mine. Wasn't able to shoot it today due to weather. Been itching to go to the range all week.

Several years ago I bought a Savage .243; it was one of those "package" guns that came with a scope, but no Accutrigger. Very, very similar to what is now the Axis line. It shot great, I was stunned with accuracy with both factory ammo and my 95 gr Noslers and Varget. After a couple of years I sold it to upgrade to a rifle with a nicer walnut stuff (I'm a sucker for the classic furniture), but had absolutely no complaints. Easy to feed, soft recoil with the thick pad, accurate too.

Bottom line, Savage makes great guns at great prices.

My brother-in-law seems to get good results from Remington 100gr CL ammo. He gets ~2 inch groups (pretty good for him) at 100 yards. The Federal Power Shock 100gr opened the groups up by a 1/2 inch or so. He shoots from a bench without a rest.

When I put the rifle in my rest, the groups on the Federal stuff shrank to about 1 1/2 inches. I didn't get a chance to shoot any of the Remington ammo while using the rest.

The rifle is a Savage Axis package gun with no mods at all. The trigger seems to be in the 8lb range. I'm thinking that lightening the trigger a bit may help tighten the groups a bit, can't hurt to clip a coil and see what happens. On my .223 Axis it made quite a difference.

I'm shooting 95 grain federal fusions in mine. I generally get half inch groups. The fusions are priced about as cheap as core-lokts.

I just mounted a scope on mine today... Range report may follow shortly, if I can get to the range with various bullet weights AND remember that I committed to a range report.

I went out to the range for a short time today. My best load was 37.8gr of H414 with a Hornady 100gr BTSP. I got a 1.2" 4 shot group at 50 yds. Not great, but with a one sandbag rest slight wind, two shots in one hole and numb trigger finger I'm happy. Going to load some more in increments around 37.8 and see what I get.

I've got one. It's generally a 1.0-1.5moa for 5-shots. However with the 65gr Hornady V-max over 42.5gr of IMR4064 seated to 2.625" it will do close to 1/2".
Three shot groups with 100gr Sierras will sometimes beat 1". I killed the only deer I got this year with it.

It's a "beater" rifle, but is my kitchen gun during hunting season. If I wake up, go to the coffee pot and there's a deer in the backyard, it's whats handy and what I reach for. Until something else strikes a cord with me.

I did have to do a trigger job and relieve some of the stock to keep it from touching the barrel. But no major investment. After ititial load work-up I took the high power scope off of it and put a cheap Simmons 8pt 3-9x scope on it. I actually have kind of taken a liking to the scope. It shoots well and "fits" the budget personna of the rifle. A decent combination, acutually.

Do get the Weaver #402 front base for it however; or you'll be limited on scopes that will fit it. (allows mounting a shorter tube scope).

Best load I've found for several .243's has been 41.5gr of IMR4350. If your .243 won't shoot well with this with a decent bullet (Speer, Hornady, Sierra) it probably won't shoot anything well.
