I’m in the market for another .243- I found a Steyr Prohunter in stainless w/iron sights for about $650, but I’ve kinda got my eye on a Winchester Coyote also for about $550. I’d have to spend probably another $400 at least for mount, rings and scope for the Winchester. I’ve always liked the Steyr design, though I’ve never shot one and it’s ready to go with the iron sights. Mmmmm. I’m confused.

Any suggestions?

Not exactly a suggestion QBG but .... year or so ago, got a raffle rifle in .243 ..... Savage 99C ...... lever action. I set it up with scope mounts and a reasonable Simmonds scope ...... all in all quite a 'tight budget'' gun but .......... it shot incredibly well outa the box!

I used a box of factory sighting in and then worked up a load with a heavy 105 grn spitzer SP bullet ahead of 33.9 grns Vit N140. Fantastic! Even better than factory. Man this rifle rocks ... well for me anyways!

Mind you, a Steyr would be rather nice!!:p

Open sights are a great back up,BUT , I am a diehard Wincester fan,no remmy's for me.You could use the 400 on a scope quick take off ring set up and get both,,,,coupla pennies for ya

I really like those Steyrs and don't think you'd go wrong with one but I love my Winchester Coyote in 243. It and my Ruger 77 in 25-06 get the most work out of all my rifles.

Mine came properly floated and glass bedded. The only thing I've done to mine is had the trigger tweaked and the guy re-beddeded it whilel he had it. My only complaint, and it is a small complaint considering it's expected use, is the safety is pretty hard to work. The one on my Model 70 HVB in 308 can be easily worked with my pinky.

The guy I have that loads some ammo for me worked up a load with the 105 Gr Hornady A Max bullets, not sure of the powder or charge but with him shooting his loads, he was getting 5/8" at 100 yards. Way better than I can consistantly shoot.

Here she is with my beloved old beat up 6x42 Swarovski sniper scope. This rifle now wears Zeiss VMV 2.5-10x50 glass.
