Just got an encore with a 25-07 AI barrel and the AI dies. I know I can fire standard 25-06 rounds to fore form them. But is there anywhere to buy AI brass? Can I make some from standard 25-06 brass or maybe 270? Or am I stuck with Firing store ammo until I save up some fire formed? I can only get to the range a few times a year so I like to work up at least 10 loads to try for each rifle. Should I get 25-06 dies to start working uP loads? How different will it be from AI?

You can make them, with a lot of work, from .30-06 "basic brass" (cylindrical brass with no shoulder or neck) but not from another cartridge that's already been formed (unless it's another type of AI brass and you have a little luck).

The best and easiest way is to just fire form them. Then you know they fit your chamber.

What is the difference between the 25/06 and 25/06 Ackley Improved? and What method is recommended when forming cases? Use 25/06 cases, I would use new 280 Remington cases If I had 25/06 Ackley Improved dies.

The 25/06 has a short neck, the 25/06 AI has a long neck, when chambering a 25/06 case in an Ackley Improved chamber the case head spaces on the neck/shoulder juncture, meaning the neck/shoulder juncture is formed when the case is chambered and the rest of the shoulder and case body is formed when fired, expect the case to shorten when the case fills the chamber. there are all types of cute thing that are recommended when fire forming, I use standard 25/06 loads, think about it, ‘time is a factor’ even when fire forming.

Cylinder Brass? R-P cylinder brass has a 35 Whelen head stamp, the case length is 2.650 with a straight wall, I can not imagine someone using R-P Cylinder Brass for anything smaller than 338, there are too many other options.

If I start reloading standard 25-06 should that be a decent base for working up a load and get my fire formed brass at the same time?

bwsmith, no, fire forming cases from 25/06 to Ackley Improved is done once, point being you only need to do it once if done correctly. And, there are published loads to use once the cases are formed.
