I'm looking at a 25-06AI that I want to pick up, but haven't started reloading yet, and want some information on it.

1 what is there downside of using regular 25-06 ammo instead. Asking because I found a great deal on a large amount.

2 can you load rounds light as in 40-45gr of powder instead of the ~50gr capacity for younger shooters that can't handle the possible recoil. (Able to load these rounds equal to a 243 or maybe 6.5 for the shooter)

I'm new to this don't roast me too hard

The shoulder angle is different between the 2 rounds, not the same. Most have to fire form 1st before they get to load an accurate round.

I will let those who have the gun give you the finer details.

Do you reload currently. If you do not an improved cartridge may not be the best place to start. Sometimes AI cartridges are not as easy as they seem.

Reduced loads can be found for most cartridges. However, you can't just drop a 50 gr charge down to 45 or 40. Most powders will not function properly.

The Ackley shoulder helps center factory ammo in the chamber, so they normally shoot factory ammo very well. It will fireform the factory ammo so long it's a true ackley chamber, the starting load data should be pretty mild and good for kids or shooters shy to recoil.

I don't know the specifics, but dad has messed around some with Trail Boss in his 25-06AI.

.25-06 is already a hot load. Making it into an Ackley Improved is overkill in my book.

I love the Ackley cartridges but they really shine when used with a slightly underpowered cartridge. The .257 Roberts AI and 7x57 AI are good examples. Blowing out the case and giving it a 40 deg. shoulder is a boon with these calibers. .280 AI is a favorite as a "beanfield rifle" also.

ya I think Ackley said even he didn't see much improvement with the 25-06ai and I think the 6.5-06 should help with case life and a few other things but not worth it the barrel needs setting back and all.
