25-20 why so high?

I would so buy this if I had the $ and wasn't in the middle of the Oregon Gun registration fiasco , This is the BOMB!

I keep watching those, but I'm just not willing to go that high when I can rebarrel an 1894 .357 and wind up with a rifle I like more at a lower price point. Just wouldn't be able to run spitzers.

I'd grab a clean 62 at the ~$800 mark, but I'm still not enamored with the Ruger-esque lines of the gun. The 96 series are pretty much the ugliest lever actions ever made, and the 56, 57 & 62 held that title before them, having only slightly more graceful lines.

But an excellent format for Ruger to die cast with pretty lines, Plastic or wood stock options and 10 round magazines . In .17 Hornet. .256 Win Mag and .327mag would be real nice . I think those guns are pretty and sleek and nicely machined. Also the super short lever stroke was pretty neat on the ones I've tried !

I personally wouldn’t even bother with gunbroker.

With the fees and taxes they charge I’ve completely stopped trading there.

I picked up this Savage Sporter off Gunsinternational for $450.00, no sales tax, no Gunbroker fees, total to my FFL was $475.00.

This refinished Marlin Model 27S I picked up at a Gunshow last summer for $300.00

And it’s an exceptional shooter.

5 rounds at 50 yards off the bench with my handloads.

As has been shared, if you look around, expand where you shop, know what a good deal is and what is not, you’ll end up with what you want at a price you want to pay before too long.
Did your savage sporter come with rings and bases? Do you know a source for them? I haven't even started to look yet.

Well, I waded through 16 pages over on savage shooters and finally found a post about scope bases apparently weaver #16 goes up front and #15 goes on the back. They make a side mount as well but I don't think this rifle is drilled and tapped for that.

It's a Christmas miracle. I just found a Savage Sporter in 25-20 A.K.A mdl23 over on gunbroker for $472 to my ffl. I figure if I don't like it I'll at least be able to get my money back out of it at that price.
Hope it's not the one that had no mag and the seller didn't say anything about it until I PMed him. A good original mag goes for $100+

Yes, my Savage came already drilled and tapped with Weaver mounts installed.

If you’re going to have your rifle set up the same way you’re going to have to have your gunsmith be careful about placement of the mount/mounts/rail and rings.

The receiver diameter is quite small and the slot in the receiver for the bolt handle crowds the top of the receiver and doesn’t leave a lot of real estate for a mount/rail.

Once you choose the mount or rail your going use you’re going to have to be careful about the rings you’re going to use and their placement.

As you can see the bolt handle on my setup has about 1mm clearance and the mounting bolts for the rings have to be placed on the left side of the receiver.

If they weren’t the bolt handle would hit the nut and you’d never be able to cycle the bolt.

Whoever set mine up chose to place the rings behind the opening in the receiver (I assume) so as not to place screw holes directly over the chamber (although I don’t know why).

Mine appears to already have been drilled and tapped. Some say they came from the factory?
The pictures make it seem like weird placement but I won't know anything till next week when I actually get it in hand. pix407950909.jpg pix266123715.jpg

Looks like you got a pretty good score there!

I'm more a pump and lever guy for this cartridge and already have 5 of them, but I'd have likely gone for that rifle at that price if I were in a buying mood.

The 23 usually has the side of reciever drilled for the standard Weaver side mount . You can put over the bore Weaver rings on that still availble mount . It is what I have on a 23D .22 Hornet with an OLD Bushnell 3-9 Scope Chief .

I'm somewhat annoyed with Lee, who told me they can't be bothered with .25 cal molds because there isn't enough market. With CNC machining, it ought to be an hour's effort or less to build a program to make them. I have an old Winchester .25-20 mold that I have worked on, but I'd like to have an aluminum mold.

Any issue with a boat tail cast bullet. I'm thinking I want to cast 70-75gr non gas check bullet for this rifle. So far this is the only mold I've found in that weight. Still looking of course.

When was the last time you took something from napkin sketch to market ready machined parts and assemblies?

Manufacturing doesn't work this way. You don't just draw a quick CAD file and a multiaxis spits out a finished product. It'd be nice, but it ain't reality, especially with things that have critical features and tight tolerances everywhere, such as molds.

I picked up the rifle today. I definitely got a deal on it!!! This rifle looks like it was kept in the closet or behind the kitchen door for "just in case". I don't think its been shot or carried much at all. The bore is dirty but bright. Some surface rust from handling but I'd guess 90percent of the bluing is still here. A close look at the crown looks like a touch up might be in order.
My MPmold for a 73gr bullet (came with hp pins as well as fp pins) is here. Now if RCBS would get me my dies. I need to find some brass. Even if it was only 20pcs..... 20221217_115817.jpg 20221217_115835.jpg

The wood isn't half bad and I was surprised by the trigger. It isn't target grade but it is better than I was led to believe.
Scope mounting is going to be problematic. It's not drilled for side mount and o don't want to. The top mount holes are way too far apart for today's scopes. I'll have to measure, but maybe a Stith type mount in the front sight dovetail and a regular weaver in the rear?

Looking at the pics in post #60 I wounder if a rail could be fitted the full length of the receiver using only the rear holes? From the extractor position cases should come out sideways and miss a rail. Or it could be trimmed a bit for clearence like I have seen on other guns. It should be solid enough if you don,t put a huge scope on it. Better than squinting at open sights. Just a thought.
