I was at the local Big 5 here in Las Vegas looking for a surplus rifle and they had a sign saying "NEVADA BACKGROUND CHECKS $25". Is it standard procedure to charge so much for a background check?

In Oregon,it's mandated by the state at $10,shops have no choice.$25 does seem a bit high, though. What do other places charge?

Last time I bought a rifle there was no charge, that was about 2 months ago - new riflle bought at a gun store. of course they probably already figure it in the price. last gun show I was at, they wanted $5.00. If I am buying a gun from them, I tell them to eat the price or I'll buy elsewhere. If it works fine, if not I can shop around or give in. For $25.00 I would definitely haggle.

Background Check Fee

$25.00 Is State Fee For Background Check Here In Nevada, We Have No Choice In Charging It As We Have To Pay This Same Amount To State Agency For Conducting The Background Check. We As Dealers Do Not Pocket The Money, It Has To Be Paid To The State. If Dealer In Nevada Cuts You A Deal On The Bg Chk, Then He Is Covering The Balance Out Of The Profit. Which Would Lead Me To Believe If They Could Afford To Do That -if You Were Actually Getting A Deal.

welcome to THR Darkmarker. :D

that is the first post I have seen anywhere in which everyword began with a Capitol letter. is there a setting for that? ;)

:D :D

No charge for background checks in Colorado: the state mandaged them, so the state has to pick up the tab.

Capital. Trust me, eh? Some word processors have a feature that will initial-capitalize every word.

Nevada has a state background check and a NICS check?

What kind of BS is that?

It's amazing the ways the states can come up with :cuss: ways to stick it to the gun owners.

Darkmaker had 1 word not capitalised-- "if".

I've never been charged extra for a background check...though, only 3 of my guns made me get one to begin with  . Ahh, the joys of FTF transfers.

Here in Illinois FTIP charges the dealer $2.00 per phone call and most collect it back from the customer.
$25.00 is outrageous, what do you get with that background check? a Concealed Carry License??

Get a CCW

Best thing to do here in Nevada is get a CCW (shall issue). Once you have it no more background checkes ever, just show your DL and CCW and pay and you're on your way. Resident CCW is good for 5 years. It cost's $120 plus about the same for the certification class. So if you buy 10 guns in the next five years it's paid for itself and even more if the cost goes up in the next five years, plus you will have a CCW.

Background check initiated by a FFL costs all of $2 in VA. The program is self-funded and administered by the VASP. Links up to state and federal databases to check for disqualifiers.

no charge here for a background check if you go to your local police dept and ask for a permit to purchase card, I believe these are only for handguns. and a permit to purchase lasts for a year in Minnesota. Also a carry permit is a five year permit to purchase. no limit on Numbers either. no one here charges for a nics check either.

Thank You For The Welcome

They Charge A Dollar A Word To Have Them All Capitols, If Is A Gimme.
Really, I'm A Better Gunsmith Than A Typist Or I At Least Pretend To Be.
State Sets The Fee Here In Nevada, Trying To Recoup Money's Spent On The Employees To Run Background Check. Think Of It What You Will, I'd Rather Know That The Backgrounds Are Being Checked Before Delivery Of The Firearm. I Know The Old Standby Of Criminals Don't Walk Into Gunstores To By Guns Legally, You'd Be Suprised To See How Many Actually Try. My Favorite Line "you Mean That Thing I Did That I Forgot That I Was Arrested For".
Yeah That Was A Winner.

Check please!

Hi all:

I'm new here and hope my typing is up to the challenge! :D

I work part time in a gun shop here in VT - we have to do a NICS check but that is a toll free call and doesn't cost us anything except time. Part of the price of doing business I reckon. I've never been charged in Vermont.

Why shouldn't you have to pay to exercise a RIGHT. Sure seems fair to me.
No background check that I'm aware of here (Idaho), you pay for the gun and tax and that's it.

"Think Of It What You Will, I'd Rather Know That The Backgrounds Are Being Checked Before Delivery Of The Firearm."

That's fine and dandy, but $25 to make sure I am not a felon is absurd. Why should I have to pay for a mandated background check? That is a quarter of the cost of the rifle I was looking for. That is ridiculous. Yeah, we all know criminals submit to and pay for background checks since they obtain their weapons through legal means. I will now look for a FTF purchase so I do not have to pay the bs $25 fee.

darkmaker is right,

The State of NV, Nevada Highway Patrol, charges that fee for background checks. They do not use FBI NICS in Nevada. It is basically a tax for every firearm sold in Nevada by a dealer.

Nevada is full of taxes for this-and-that since they have no state income tax. If you work in a casino you need a "Sheriff's Card" which is $75 for a background check. Never mind you can work while your application is pending, without the background check even being completed. If you work in a place that sells alcohol you need an Alcohol Card, $25. If you work in a place that serves food you need a Health Card (unknown $). If you work in a restaurant in a casino that serves food and alcohol you get zapped on all 3 cards.

Welcome to Nevada.......

I'd love it if my fee was only $25. Here in the PRK the state fee for DROS is $45 and most dealers add on $25 to $75. If it's a handgun, you also have to have the HSC that's another $25 to the state.

We Do Have Nics Check In Nevada

When We Do Background Check, We Get Back Both A State Invoice Number And A Nics Invoice Number
