It takes time, and they're in business to make a profit.
Last time I bought a rifle there was no charge, that was about 2 months ago - new riflle bought at a gun store. of course they probably already figure it in the price. last gun show I was at, they wanted $5.00. If I am buying a gun from them, I tell them to eat the price or I'll buy elsewhere. If it works fine, if not I can shop around or give in. For $25.00 I would definitely haggle.

NC doesn't charge for the NICS check. They don't even have to make a call if you have a CCW.
Since the NICS check is REQUIRED by law, what is next? They charge you for the extra time it takes to collect sales tax?

Which Would Lead Me To Believe If They Could Afford To Do That -if You Were Actually Getting A Deal.

No charge for background checks in Colorado: the state mandaged them, so the state has to pick up the tab.

Get a CCW
Best thing to do here in Nevada is get a CCW (shall issue). Once you have it no more background checkes ever, just show your DL and CCW and pay and you're on your way. Resident CCW is good for 5 years. It cost's $120 plus about the same for the certification class. So if you buy 10 guns in the next five years it's paid for itself and even more if the cost goes up in the next five years, plus you will have a CCW.

Background check initiated by a FFL costs all of $2 in VA. The program is self-funded and administered by the VASP. Links up to state and federal databases to check for disqualifiers.

In Florida, state background check is $5 and NICS is not required. CCW holders are no longer exempt from background checks, effective last July. I don't profit a single cent from background checks.

no charge here for a background check if you go to your local police dept and ask for a permit to purchase card, I believe these are only for handguns. and a permit to purchase lasts for a year in Minnesota. Also a carry permit is a five year permit to purchase. no limit on Numbers either. no one here charges for a nics check either.

I Know The Old Standby Of Criminals Don't Walk Into Gunstores To By Guns Legally, You'd Be Suprised To See How Many Actually Try. I work part time in a gun shop here in VT - we have to do a NICS check but that is a toll free call and doesn't cost us anything except time. Part of the price of doing business I reckon. I've never been charged in Vermont.

I will now look for a FTF purchase so I do not have to pay the bs $25 fee.

The State of NV, Nevada Highway Patrol, charges that fee for background checks. They do not use FBI NICS in Nevada. It is basically a tax for every firearm sold in Nevada by a dealer.
Nevada is full of taxes for this-and-that since they have no state income tax. If you work in a casino you need a "Sheriff's Card" which is $75 for a background check. Never mind you can work while your application is pending, without the background check even being completed. If you work in a place that sells alcohol you need an Alcohol Card, $25. If you work in a place that serves food you need a Health Card (unknown $). If you work in a restaurant in a casino that serves food and alcohol you get zapped on all 3 cards.
