I'm thinking seriously about finally pursuing the rifle I've wanted for a long time. The first non-military bolt action rifle purpose-made for deer hunting, the Savage Model 1920! It is an elegant rifle and isn't truly a scope type of rifle, although it can be done, but it only comes in the aforementioned calibers, the 250 Sav. and the 300 Sav.. I was thinking about the 250 because I've already got 30 cal rifles but after reading a bit more about the 250, I'm not sure. Looking for feedback, opinions and anything else that brings about conversation. Thanks!

.250 if for deer only. .300 if your thinking of going after anything a little bigger like black bear

For me .300 ammo easier to find. Only a little though.

.300 Savage, as the 1-10 twist will work for nearly all currently bullets.

The early . 250s had a 1-14 (don't know if the 1920s had that), and are still twisted a little slow at 1-10.

Right on that. The 1920 did have the 1-14 Twist in 250 from what I have read. Never having checked one I cannot verify that. Anything longer than a flat base 87 grain cup and core may not stabilize. Some very short 100 grain bullets may work. The 250 is a great little cartridge and the wife has been knocking deer over with one for more than 30 years.

Although not the same application, I built a custom 250-3000 Savage 20 years ago on a mauser receiver. That rifle remains one of my all-time favorites. I don't recall what twist I ordered but it's perfect for 100 gr bullets, which is what I shoot in it. It has low recoil, great performance, short action so you can really make a lightweight setup if that's what you're after. I prefer it over my 243 in most situations.

I also have a 300 savage in a 99 lever-action. It's a great cartridge and rifle as well. In a bolt-action, I would prefer one of my 308s, but in the lever action it's a lot of fun. You can't really go wrong with either one!
