I've got a surplus of 250 grain 45 Colt cast bullets and no more .45 Colt gun. Anyone load these up much for .45 ACP? I read an article not too long ago by John Taffin using similar loads in an XD. I'll mainly be plinking with these in a 625JM and some limited use in one of my 1911s.

They should work fine in the revolver. It will be a test and see in the 1911. It may or not work depending on bullet style. I have shot quite a few 250 Gr bullets in .45 ACP.

5.0 to 5.5 Grs W-231. Start at 5.0 and work up. I have shot many 250 Gr Raniers with 5.5 Grs W-231 in my 1911s. I still have a few 250 Gr Raniers with a cannelure. They have not sold those in a while.

Bump most any 230 Gr data by 10% for those lead 250s. Just start low and work up. You have plenty of wiggle room in the 625JM. What diameter are they? .454 is probably not going to work in the auto.

Use this data/advise at your own risk.

AA #2, WST, Competition, N310, & N320 are my favorites for target loads. N320, SR 4756, WSF, & AA #5 take care of my full loads. I don't try to make anything scream. Played with True Blue, and it has potential.

Are you sure about that? Unless the limiting factor is velocity rather than pressure the charge weight usually decreases for a heavier bullet. I'm several time zones away from my Lyman Revolver and Pistol Handbook or I'd see if there's a 250gr .45acp charge listed there.

For lead bullets with W231, Hodgdon shows the following max charges:

155gr - 6.7gr - 1112fps
180gr - 6.0gr - 950fps
200gr - 5.6gr - 914fps
230gr - 5.3gr - 834fps

Bump it back. That should be obvious, but I guess I should have worded it better.
