i might be getting rid of my tc venture in 25-06, reloading dies, and 80 some pieces of rem brass. i'll be buying a encore in 257 Roberts Ackley Improved, 1 in 10" twist, in a 21" mgm barrel. i sent an email to mgm barrels to make sure it has a 40 degree shoulder, so that is taken care of. i have 2 full boxes of 115 grain nosler ballistic tips. do these work for deer, busting a shoulder, etc, or should something else work?
should fireforming be 87 or 100gr? would imr 4350 work? the ack imp is new to me, any help will be greatly appreciated...

I don't think the .257 Bob Improved is as fast as the .25/06. I don't get it. You might want to keep your .25/06 until you decide if the Bob is actually better. You can load your .25/06 down to Bob velocities.

I have a semi custom savage bolt gun in 257AI. I like it. I currently use 42.3grn of imr 4350 under a sierra 117grn bullet. Shoots as well as anything else I have tried. You should be able to fire any 257 bob round in the ackley chamber and get a fire formed ackley case. Neck size and reload. PM me an email address and I will see what I can do about sending you some load data I have gathered. (from manuals, not my personal data. I don't trust people's pet loads until they have 10k posts here :)

:scrutiny:

I don't understand. That'd be like selling your GMC Sierra crew cab with a 6.0L and buying a Chevy Silverado standard cab with a 5.3L.

better gas mileage? different color? Wanted a break open single shot with barrel options instead of a bolt gun?

since i had a stroke the right half of my body only gets about 20%. i've wanted a 257bob ai for years, and i get the chance now, esp with the encore. i shoot leftie(alway have)so some bolts are becoming problematic to me.
besides, i get another gun :neener:

I can understand the "desire" to aquire a .257AI.
Probably the best match of case capacity to bore diameter. Should be a bit more efficient. Should do essentially what the .300WSM does compared to the .300WinMag.

I DON'T LIKE THE 115gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.
From my "Bob", it's "ok" on smaller deer at a distance (over 200yds). It's proven to be far to "frangible" for the .257WbyMag.

I'm curious about the load above mentioned of 42.3gr IMR4350 in the AI. I use 43.0gr with a 115-117gr in my 'regular' "Bob".... But then again, it's a 3" Bob chamber in an E.R.Shaw 22" bbl on an M98 custom.... Apples to Oranges ?

My circa 1980's Sierra manual for the .257AI shows a max load of 46gr for 2,900fps and the companion Hornady manual with the .257RCBS (28deg shoulder) shows 44.5 also for 2,900fps.

fwiw; my "Bob" gives 2,900fps with H4831 and 117gr Hornady or Sierra, but then again, it's a 3" Bob with a generous throat in a long action. It more closely follows the .257RCBS data than it does the various +P listings in the more recent Speer and Lyman manuals.... Especially with the slower burning powders (4350's and 4831's to include RL22).
However, the Hodgdon's listed max "non- +P" loads have always been "accuracy" loads in my rifle. Even 30yrs old this year (built in 1983), and with some mid-barrel pitting, with 44.0gr of H380 and a Sierra 100gr (Prohunter or GameKing) it gets 3,100fps and near 1/2moa... Ditto 45.0gr of H414, IMR4350, or 48.5gr of H4831...

The .257AI with a 21" bbl should be very, very close to a 22" .25/06 with ~5-10% less powder; IMO... Of course a 22" bbl .25/06 is a hobbled throughbred race-horse...Really needs a 26-27"bbl. The .257wby likewise with a 24"bbl (like my Wby Vanguard) needs a 27-28"bbl to really deliver its "goods"...

I use that 42.3 grns because it shot well, and it is low recoil. I don't use the extra oomph of the ackley. I'm recoil shy and so I load light. The only reason I have an ackley is because that is what the rifle was already chambered in whey I found it all left handed, lonely and forlorn in the back corner of the pawn shop.

"Accuracy load" is understandable. That's why the load I use (43.0gr IMR4350; 117gr Hornady RN or BtSpt) is what I settled on. Gives about 2,750fps from my gun. Kills all out of proportion to recoil, noise, and muzzle blast (all quite mild).

I wish I could say I like the Roberts AI but I've been a .25-06 fan for 37 years. Nothing wrong with the Roberts but I can't part with a .25-06. For a hunting rifle I've never found anything I like more for game up to Elk.
