As the title asks, is this a good price for a stainless S&W model 65, 4 inch barrel, in average condition?

Thanks,

Tim

"Average Condition" could mean different things to different folks. I don't know what an Average Condition firearm is, but I can give you the Value Ranges listed in the latest edition of the "Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson for reference:

Good - $225
VG - $265
Exc - $300
ANIB - $400

Since prices vary so much in different areas I can only say that where I live a decent stainless S&W 65 would be a good deal at $265. When you say average condition, it may depend. External scratches etc can be polished out with not too much effort and make a gun look 100% better.

I've seen them here for $300 - so that's not bad.

That's very fair, depending on the condition. I paid $300 for this one about a year ago. I'd say it's "above average".

Buy it.

I have a M65-4 that i wouldn't sell for $265.00.
It has rack dings from the agency that had it first.
Its been worked over a little and is a very nice shooter.
I really like the none counter bored chambers, there easy to keep clean.

I really love the look and feel of the counterbored cylinder but my 617 has taught me to hate them. It's a real pain in the butt to keep clean with rimfire.

Thanks for the replies.

What I meant by average condition is that it was a duty gun for many years, so it has the usual wear and tear that a "working gun" ends up with. Things like small scratches, and holster marks.

I just bought (yesterday) a M 65-2 w/3" barrel with a tight action for $270. and considered it a better deal than I was seeing on gunbroker. It was marked MASS STATE POLICE on the backstrap, had some scratches but was very well maintained.

No regrets whatsoever.

A couple of weeks ago, a local pawn shop had two Model 65s (65-8s if I read correctly). They were in decent shape, with 4-inch heavy barrel, Pachmayr grips, one for $340 and one for $370, so $265 sounds like a really good deal to me. I'd ask if that's their best price and go from there.
