.270 Bullet Weight

I haven't hunted with my .270 in a few years but put a decent scope on it this week so I want to pull it out and shoot it some this season.

I used to shoot a 130gr soft point and it was a real performer on Whitetail deer.

Hornady isn't making the load I used in their "Light Magnum" category anymore, but they are making a boat tail spire point Light Magnum in 140gr.

Anyone have much experience with the 140's out of a .270? Mine is a Weatherby Vanguard with a 24" barrel. Twist is 1 in 10.

While I have no experiance with a 140 gr .270 bullet, I have found that most .270's seem to have a preferance accuracy wise for either 130's or 150's.

I do have a lot of experiance with 140 gr .284 bullets, in a 7x57 and all that experiance has been very good, both performance and accuracy wise.

I'd be more concerened about bullet construction than weight. While there are those who disagree, I know of several instances of boat tails separating core from jacket in game.

If you like factory 130 grain .270 for Whitetail Deer, and you are willing to pay for it, I think you would be hard pressed to do better than the Winchester Supreme with 130 Grain Ballistic Tip. My rifle shoots them just about the same as my handloads with 130 grain Sierra Game Kings. We moved and the reloading gear was out of commission while we were building a shop and I decided to try the Winchester load. I really liked it. But there are a lot of very good quality .270 loadings out there with 130's and for whitetail, I think it will be a challenge to find one that DOESN'T work. IMHO it is more a matter of what your rifle likes to shoot accurately than bullet construction or weight when you're talking about 130, 140 or 150 grain bullets fired from a .270

I had really good results on deer with Federal's "Fusion" line of ammo in 130gr weights hunting last year. As a plus, it was quite accurate as well.

I for one have had exellent results with 140gr bullets in the .270. Not as fast as the 130's, flatter traj. than the 150's.

+1 for the Winchester Ballistic SilverTip in 130grains. Best factory package I've found for my Remington m700 in .270win. 150gr works well too, but 130 is plenty for any whitetail you'll come into contact with.

Have never tried the 140's because the accuracy was astonishing with the 130's.
