Ok guys I am loading for my new tikka 270 bolt gun. It has a 1 in 10 twist barrel and I will use 130 grain bullets ? time what powder do you use do you have a pet load where do you seat your bullet at. Do you crimp the finished round.

Bullet seating depth depends on how long your throat is and what bullet you are using, usually my Tikka likes those long poly tipped SSTs near max length and my Serrias loaded a little shorter. For 130gr try H4831sc in the 270 win, starting load is 55gr and max is 59gr, you will probably get your best accuracy closer to the 55gr mark. Never crimped a 270 so I cannot really comment on it.

I don’t know the twist rate in my FN Deluxe 270. I tried a few powders, the 4350’s gave me good velocities, I think Varget has more potential than the one test I tried, I used to use IMR 4064 with 130’s and it worked great. My rifle did not shoot as well with 130’s as it did with 150’s, which I think is a bummer as the 130 should be the best overall bullet in the 270.

I would recommend a short cut 4350, I think the latest AA4350 is short cut. The 4350 series of powders are an outstanding powder for many bolt gun cartridges, I think you could load 99% of all rifle cartridges with IMR 4895 and IMR 4350. I use IMR 4350 in the 6.5 Swede, 7.5 Swiss, 270, 30-06, 300 H&H Magnum, it works well.

Do you crimp the finished round

As for crimping I do not recommend crimping. Crimping will shift the lead core inside the bullet and deform the jacket. Swaging the lead core just creates inaccuracy. A center of gravity in line with the axis of rotation is critical to accurate shooting. If the jacket thickness varies, if the core is uneven, if the CG of the round is not where is should be, because you swaged the bullet with a crimp die, the bullet could go anywhere.

You really only need to crimp for lever actions and elephant guns. If you have a 20mm multiple barreled chain gun, crimping is recommended. Other than that, don’t crimp rifle bullets.

I had better luck with IMR4350 in the 130's and for everything heavier use H4831sc.

54.5grains IMR 4350 was my best load for the 130 Interlock.

IMR4350 is the most versatile powder of all time, it might not be the best at any one caliber/weight but it is darn good in nearly everything, I even have a killer 130gr load using 4350 in my Savage 270 WSM, not setting any speed records mind you (3150ish fps) but it rivals my Tikka for mind bending accuracy.
BTW if you do want to try 4350 first starting charge is 51gr and max is 55gr. Nosler says you are more likely to get superb accuracy as you approach max charge with that powder, never tried that combo myself so I cannot personally vouch for it. Listed speed is 3078fps with 55gr.

Kachok,I agree,IMR 4350 works wonders in my 30-06,.270.and even my .243.IMR 4064 is another of my favorites. hdbiker

I shot a lot of stuff in my .270's over the years until about 25 years ago when Sierra came out with a 140 Grain bullet.
IMR 4064 seems like it was made for the .270 and my Ruger#1 in .270 just loves the bullet/powder combo.
I shoot 3 shot dime size groups in my rifle.
My Buddie's Pre-War Model 70 and my Nephew's Remington 700 shoot equally as well with this load, ESPECIALLY the pre-war 70.

I use H4350 and 130 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips when I want to impress. Out of an old Remington Sportsman 78 I can usually coax three shots into 5/8" at 100 yards. H450 was even better and I wish I would have bought a bunch before it went obsolete. I got a Stony Point OAL gauge and set the shoulder around 30 thousandths off the lands for best accuracy, which is quite a bit longer than factory. No crimp.

All depends on your choice of bullet and how finicky your gun is. I have a 270 that is dead nuts accurate. But I have target loads with 130 Nosler ballistic tips and imr 4350 but try that with 130 Hornady ssts or Barnes tax and the groups go from .5 Moa to 6 inches at 200 yds. Pick a bullet, try a few loads. Keep good data.

When I first got my 270 T-3 all I had was H414. Works like a dream so I haven't tried anything else!

We are shooting the same load but different bullets. After trying several brands I finally settled on Speer HotCor. IMR4350 is my goto powder.
