270 versus 30.06

They are both fine.
This is true. They are both fine... except for the 30-06. It's an obsolete and terribly flawed round. :neener:
Why would you favor a .270 over a .30-06 when an '06 does more.
When an '06 does more... when that day comes, I won't favor the .270 anymore. Nah, I'm lying, I'll still prefer it! :D

I have shot both. Only own a .270 and load for it. If it ain't broke, you know how it goes.

My hunting rifle is a Winchester Model 70 30-06 but I'd not hesitate a second to hunt anything in the lower 48 ('cept ole' griz!) with the 270. They are fraternal twins in that both use the same case.

I like the .30 caliber bullet selection since I always load my own. That and that I don't have a .270 lol.

My dad hunts with one and it does a great job. Either one will work fine. Just use rifle that fits you better (unless they are identical, then close your eyes and pick.).

Both are overgunned for deer at less than 100 yards, but they'll both kill 'em dead! :D A 30-30 is probably the most appropriate tool. I like the 30-06 over the 270 myself as I believe its a bit more versatile. I'd go with the heavier cup & core bullets myself at that short range to reduce velocity and explosiveness. 150gr in the 270 or 165-180gr in the '06.

Go for the .260/7mm-08/.308. No recoil. :)

And everyone is right. Under 100 yards, any real centerfire rifle with a good bullet design and good shot placement will fit the bill.

From .243 to .30-'06, I figure that where Bambi is concerned, the difference among the options is pretty much like picking fly-poop out of pepper. They all work and work well if Might Nimrod does it righteously.

Self-discipline, skill and shot placement. Most any serious centerfire will do just fine.

Ford v. Chevy

Oh no! Not that debate!

I'll never own a .30-06 or buy from a motor company that needed a bailout.

Make mine a Ford F-270! :D

sansone, yes, a .223 will kill a deer. But I don't see it as a "go to" primary for a really wide range of hunting conditions.

I've killed running bucks to near 200 yards, and standing bucks at 350 and 450. Adding the consideration of an angling shot through the body to reach the heart/lungs, I don't really think any centerfire .22 is the answer.

Regarding the bullet deflection business, I am satisfied that any bullet can easily be deflected by intervening foliage, branches, and such. I suppose some bullets may deflect slightly less or more, but in the context of the many feet of deflection that even a light screen of brush can cause, a few inches more or less is irrelevant. So I never worry about the matter when selecting a cartridge.

.270 vs. .30-06? After several decades with each I guess you could blindfold me and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in recoil or results with either one.

And with that, I think this thread could be locked!!

Why do you pose this question? I think most are past the caliber war discussion when it comes to the 30-06 versus 270. The answer is.... It doesn't matter.
