Hello I am new to this forum and new to reloading this last fall. I am looking to get a set of 270 Win dies and a little confused about which type to get. I have found that there are full length dies,
x-dies, 40 degree improved, 2,3, and 4 die sets. I am just trying to get the right set the first time so I don't have to buy something else later. Any help that you can give me on this I would appreciate.
I have a Ruger M77 mark II 270 Winchester.

Standard set. Since it’s a repeater I would tend to go with a set that has a nice crimp, or a nice set of dies and then add a Lee factory crimp die. That will just help to keep bullets exactly where they are supposed to be rather than recoil bouncing them around in the magazine and seating the bullet deeper with each little whack.

Personally, I use a lot of Lee dies, but in .270 I prefer RCBS. I had both and gave a coworker the Lee dies (but I kept the FCD).

And before you ask, 4350 and 130 gr ballistic tips. That combination is where the .270 really shines. Work it up fairly quick with a ladder load and you will probably see a nice tight group about 2/3 of the way from min load to max load. Tweak your overall length then to where it barely fits in the magazine, and then work your load again from 1/2 gr lower than where you saw your tight group and up a bit to maybe 1 gr above. Find what works and lock it in.

RCBS makes a good product, and that’s a good choice. Really can’t go wrong with them. I like all of my Hornady rifle dies. A lot of people use Lee.

Really, a full length sizing set (standard set) would probably be best to start with, IMHO. Come back and visit us when you start to set them up.

It may be more a question of what you can find at all in these times.

rcbs three die set and read the directions before and when you set up the dies.

luck,

p.s. welcome to thr

Welcome to the site!

Unless you are loading for a special purpose, like some form of competition, all you need is a standard 2 die set with a full (FL) length sizing die. It seems like everybody is out of everything right now, including standard common calibers of dies so good luck looking for a set.

Any brand should work fine for you although many of us have our favorites. Don't forget to order a shell holder unless you buy Lee dies which include one.

Just so you will know, here is a little bit of info about the dies you named:
Full length dies --- Resize the case for the full length ( FL ) for maximum reliability
X-dies --- RCBS dies designed to minimize case stretch when resizing
40º shoulder --- for the so called improved cartridges. IE -- Ackley Improved
3&4 die sets --- Usually have additional dies for neck sizing and/or crimping

Rcbs man myself. Have a couple of sets of Hornady dies. Don’t like Lee dies because the o ring set up to lock them is weird to me. However, those that are used to Lee dies, load ammo that is as good as anyone else with a two die set.

You don’t need , or want , to crimp unless loading for a semi auto or lever. Then only if you actually have an issue with setback. Pistol cartridges are a different story.

Never loaded for a 270. One of the guys at work does and he says any of the 4350 powder ( use the data for the brand) and IMR 4831 are all he ever uses anymore.

X2 for the two-die set for starts.
I happen to have looked at a 270win RCBS 2 die set today at lgs and they've been there for several months. If you can't find a set, I'd be glad to pick them up for you, of course I'd have to add the shipping cost.

I load for two different.270’s. Both bolt actions.
Back in the late’70’, I had a set of RCBS. I got tight for $$ and sold them.
10yrs or so ago I came into another .270. I bought a set of the Lee RGB (real good buy) as I have a half dozen shell holders for ‘06 size cases. $12 iirc.
I’d get the Lee Std 2die set unless you’ll be loading for a semi auto, pump, or lever action (BLR).
You’ll need a case trimmer for once fired brass as many will be over SAAMI specs.
A hand operated primer seater is very helpful, too.
Ditto the 4350’s (including RL17) and the 4831’s. However lately I’m fond of MagPro in the .270 and .243.

Thank you all very much for the info that you have given me.
I have gotten on a couple of notify me when available lists for the RCBS x-dies and a case trimmer.
This has been a hard time to start getting into reloading as items are hard to find in stock.
I guess this will help me with trying to be more patient in my old age (lol).

Its crazy how these shortages have affected even common reloading equipment. You probably did the best thing by getting on a "notify me" list. I've seen a few common die sets on Ebay for fair prices. It might be worth a look? But anyway, Good Luck
