Last weekend I took out my Sako fine tune my zero, I had only put it onto paper up to that point. I had bought a decent supply of Remington ammo across the last couple years at good prices, more for the brass than anything else.

I was not surprised that the accuracy of the factory 270 was not what my loads for my Sig 556 are, but I WAS surprised at just how badly it it did group. This lead me to decide that it might be prudent to get supplies set in now to reload the 270.

I will be most likely loading a 130gr and/or 150gr and wanted to find out what you guys are using for powder under the 270.

H4831 or IMR 4831 ... both are the cat's meow in a .270 Win .... Reloder 22 does a very good job too .... there are many other too ... the H4831 load has been proven time and time again for many many years ... I would start there if I were you ... I've reloaded the .270 Win for about forty years now ...

Jim,
Thanks for the information. The 4831s certainly shows up as "the" powder across the years. I really didn't figure that there was a "better" choice today but wanted to check.

Sounds like no need to mess with a good thing.

Thanks again Jim.

I used IMR 4831 in my 270 Winchesters for at least 40 years and I was mostly satisfied with the powder but I did find some consistency problems between batches after Hodgdon started selling the powder. For the last 2 years I have been using Reloader 17 and I like it better. I really like 52 grains or Reloader 17 with a 130 grain bullet. I mostly use the Sierrra GameKing and the Berger hybrid bullets for accuracy but I have taken more game with the Speer HotCor and boattails.

Gotta mention H4831SC also, I've had really good results with it and it's my go to.

Just outta curiosity I loaded up a few 140grn NBT with 41gr H4895 (load for 7mm-08 with it) and was able to get 1" groups with that.

I ran by a LGS today that has reloading supplies. "Normal" powders are usually a couple of bucks more per pound than I can get elsewhere so I don't mind supporting the local guy. I picked up some H4831 and the tag said 48 bucks. I don't think they liked it when I started to laugh. I checked some large rifle primers and they were at 42/1000. I had a belly laugh going at that point while I was walking out. I guess he feels the fact the 4831 is a "classic" he can rape people for it.

Next weekend is a gun show so I guess I have some shoppin' to do.

I like H4831sc and H4350 with 130gr bullets, both powders delivered excellent velocity and accuracy loaded under 130 SST's. For 140gr and 150gr bullets I really like the new IMR7977 and Reloader 23. These two powders gave me better velocities than 4831 while still offering temperature insensitivity. My current deer and elk load is a 140gr Accubond over a stiff charge of 7977.

I like H4831 and RL22 when I loaded for the 270. Both are excellent powders.

I sold my .270 a few years back, but I used to use Winchester 760 to load for it. Great powder and it meters very well.

My goto load for the last 40 years has been 130gr Speed HotCor over IMR-4350. Killed a semi-trailor load of deer with it and it has shot SUB-MOA in several rifles. IMR-4831 and R22 work too.

IMR 4831 and a 130gr Nosler Accubond for my .270 Win. It's been a .5xx-.6xx 3 shot group for me the last few times I've shot it. A 22" barrel at 3019fps.

I also like IMR 4831 in the.270 but my favorite after many years is good 'ole IMR 4064!

4831 gets a lot of lip service for the .270 but I just can't make it do any better than what 4350 will. 130 gr bullets seem to be the answer to most everyone's troubles. Except for medium sized thin skinned critters...it's their worst nightmare.

I've had excellent results from 4350 in all the rounds in the 30-06 family. Nothing wrong with the others but I'd sure give it a look too.

At that price from your LGS you could order 1lb of powder and the primers and cover the Hazmat!

I would try to find powder, primers and bullets and order all in one shot.
(along with any other goodies you might need)

Wideners
Narchez Shooting Supply
Midsouth Shooting Supply
Midway USA
Brownells
Cabelas
and others

Cables prices are a little higher but they used to only want $20 for hazmat vs $25-$28.

Hope you find something that works well for you.

I'm hoping next weekend I can get everything except the bullets at the show. There is a couple that sells all reloading stuff I try to do business with. Good people and I figure anything I buy is less weight they have to cart out :) .

Lots of good stuff guys, thanks. I was pretty well set that 4831 was the easy button but you guys gave me lots of good options to look for.
