I am going to help another friend get started reloading. This time it is a 270 Win. The only powders I have ever used for rifles are IMR3031 and IMR 4350. These may not be the best choice for 130 SP. Bit I do have those on hand.
Can someone recommend some good choices for this bullet weigh?
Thanks in advance, Catpop

All I use for .270 is 4350. Mine and friends I load for all love 130 gr in nearly any variety. Different charge weights though. Usually about half or 2/3 between min and max, closer to max load.

Any of the 4350's should work well in the .270 Win. H-4831 is usually the first choice, followed now by Reloder 22. Some of the "old timers" even use IMR-4064. Other powders that should work are W-760, H-414, Accurate 2700, Ramshot Hunter and Reloder 19.
What do I use in mine? 53.0 gr of Reloder 17 with the Nosler 130 gr Ballistic Tip and a Remington 9 1/2 primer in a Prvi Partizan case. Not a max load, chronos around 2900 fps but very accurate and consistent.

I have used IMR 4064 IN THE .270 for years with great success.
My Ruger #1 in .270 just loves 44 grains of 4064 behind a 140 Sierra Gameking. three shot dime size groups not un-common.

I've been using RL22 for about the last 15 or so years, but prior to that I worked with IMR-4350 just about exclusively with 130 gr. bullets. And still, if I needed a good accurate high velocity load for the .270, I would hesitate for a second to use IMR-4350. Back when I loaded regularly with the 4350, my slightly enhanced 700 action was shooting sub moa @ every bit of 3150 fps with 130 gr. Speer Hot Cores. That has been one deadly effective hunting combination for everything from antelope, elk, deer, and even black bear since I began reloading 30 some years ago.

RL19 is also a great powder for .270, but for a field tested proven effective combination, I don't think anything can perform with any more predictability, than a worked up charge of 4350. You can certainly make due with a few others, but to really obtain the full potential of that cartridge, I recommend going with what has been field tested, and practically endorsed by the firearm industry, and hunting legend, Jack O'Connor. That wonderful man was known to hunt just about everything with a .270 win, and his powder of choice was IMR-4350, "lot's of it", as he was quoted as saying more than once. I once read a quote by him in a magazine many years ago, in which he was asked what load he liked the most when loading for the .270 win.. His reply, Oh, I would say a full charge of IMR-4350 and a 130 gr. Hot Core. When asked what a full charge means, he said, I leave just enough room for the bullet to get started in the neck, so about 2/3 up the neck, probably 60 something grains. Jack's well documented history as a reloading and hunting guru, was actually what inspired me to begin reloading many years ago.

Sorry for the history lesson, but I thought that little tid bit could help shed some light on the .270 win, and IMR-4350, they were made for each other.

h-4831SC My rem 700 seems to like it. But maybe there's something to this IMR 4350. May have to try some.

Tough to beat IMR4350 for what you want.

When I first started loading I tried 4350 but wanted 4831. From over 35 years of experience I've found I use more IMR4350 than IMR4831.

I don't personally reload for the .270 but my shooting buddy does and we talk about all our loads.

For a 130gr bullet there is nothing wrong with 4350 but if you're going to load anything heavier you might want to go to 4831 or better yet the short cut H4831SC. If you can't find powder right now and all you have is 4350 it's not a bad choice at all but like said above, 4831 is the "classic" 270 powder.

H414/W760 is close in performance to 4350. My buddy has recently tried Hybrid 100V and was happy with the results.

He has never used Ramshot, Alliant or Accurate powders but I'm sure there are good choices there to, I see recommendations above.

@ Gamestalker Jack O Connor's "classic load" was with 4831 not 4350 IIRC.

Either way OP if you have 4350 try it. It will be fine but I use IMR4831 in my .270 with 130gr bullets. 3019fps in a 22" barrel is what my load gets.

Try either of the 4831's and try either of the 4350's same primers, brass, length etc. Your firearm will like one better than the other if it likes 4350 better you can try the powders with similar burn rates if 4831 same.

My 270 likes VV N560. I chose that based on the above. H4831SC performed well but would not shoot a higher velocity well. Not so with N560.

There are a host of powders that will shoot well in the 270. The chamber and throat of individual rifles will cause a faster or slower powder to shoot better.

Good luck and shoot straight

270 loads

I've been loading 270 winchester for over 20 years with the same type powder....Winchester 760 with 150 gr projectles. I only push the bullet at about
2650 fps which is perfect for deer at about a hundred yards. Where I hunt in the mountains, about a hundred yards is the normal shooting distance.

My pet load is a 130gr H-SST over 52.2 gr of Ranshot Hunter. I've never tried other bullets or powder in my rifle so I might be missing out on something, but I got a good sized doe with that recipe this year.

Ditto, 4831. Is my go to for all my 270 loads. From130g to 150g. I always get the best accuracy with it

Great Forum, Great bunch of guys. Thanks for all the great 270 powder advice. I started loading last night with RP cases, IMR 4350 (on hand), CCI#200 LRP, and Nosler 130 Partition at 49.0 gr, coal 3.250. I'll work up from there.
Platform will be a custom English walnut 03-A3 with 26" Douglas barrel I built back in the late 70's. It has never been fired. Only lacks a proper Redfield 4x12 4 plex to get her on line.
WHY? About that time I got hung up on a 1958 Rem 721 in 300 HH and never got back to it. This is first excuse to return to it-- thanks to my friend, I'll now get it finished.
Thanks again, Catpop
