I am going to work up some loads with these powders and Nosler 130 or 140 ballistic tips with Winchester brass and Remington or Winchester LR primers for a deer hunting round. I was wondering if anyone has had good results with these powders and if RL22 may be better served with a LR magnum primer? I am out of 4831 powders, but have IMR and H4350 powders, but have had excellent results lately with Alliant powders, and thought that I would start with these two first.

The 270 Win works really well with at least a half dozen www.hodgdon.com distributed powders and Alliant's Rel-17, 19 and with heavier bullets, Rel-22.
The data at www.alliantpowder.com shows how the new Rel-17 has the ability for the highest velocity in many of the bottle neck cases due to its unique pressure curve.

Thanks guys for the info. I do have a pound of RL17 and a pound of Hybrid 100V that I bought on a whim when other powders weren't available.

I've posted this load before, but H4831sc does a handy job in my .270 Ruger.

130gr Ballistic Tip
52.5gr H4831sc
CCI 200 Primer

Sub 1" groups at 120 yards ain't too bad.

As far as Reloader 19, I've only given it one test, so I won't post any results, but at least it's available at Sportsman's Warehouse!

My Nosler manual mentions H4831 being there most accurate load with that bullet and IMR4831 being the most accurate with the 140gr. bullet. I don't have these powder, but will stock up on them in the near future. I loaded 25 rounds with the RL19 and 25 with the RL22. I just have to find time to shoot them.

Rokman, you need to realize that Nosler's choice of the most accurate load was in their test equipment, that does not necessarily mean that it will be accurate in your rifle. That's why you need to try different loads, to verify a good load for your rifle.

If you use this information, do not forget the normal rules for work-up in a particular rifle apply:

Quoting from my Speer Manual for Reloading Ammunition Number 8

Page 193

"In spite of the popularity of the 130 gr. bullet, probably the best medicine in the .270 for the handloader is the 150 gr. Speer (Spritzer) bullet pushed along in the neighborhood of 3,000 fps with 58 grs. of No. 4831. At over 400 yards this excellent shaped bullet of superb sectional density will shoot flatter than any 130 gr. bullet and it will arrive at 400 yards with more energy."

On Page 195 their loading table shows a a 300 yard correction of 6.8 inches.

This is why the .270 came out in 1925 and made so popular by Russell Anabel and Jack O'Conner: a flat shooting, hard-hitting, evolution of the 30-06 for Western State Elk hunters.

BTW: 58 gr. of H4831 or H4831SC is near case capacity and is also appears to be the max load for the 130 gr. SP as well.

Handloaders.com also shows a 58.5 gr. load as being a "Most Popular" ... but that seems awefully hot to me!

In the 270 Win I have had the best results with IMR 4831 (favorite) and Reloader 22. Have used H4831 and IMR 4350 with good results but IMR 4831 wins in the accuracy department in my rifle.

I have not tried yet but W780 Supreme suppose to be a good powder for the 270 Win.

RL 19 has been my go to powder for years in 270 and 30-06. It's been the best for accuracy in a lot of guns but I load it slow. Around 2750fps with 140's. I've been wanting a little more velocity lately and switched to IMR 4831 and so far it looks like the accuracy is there plus the potential for quite a bit more accuracy in the 270. I like RL 19 in 7mm Rem Mag loads too. Great powder.

Mr. Smitty I do realize that Nosler's most accurate for them was in their test barrels and may not amount to a hill of beans for me. Rest assured that I do test a lot of powders and I have found that Nosler's info was pretty much spot-on for me. I really like IMR4831, the 4350's and RL19 and will try the H4831sc when I am done with these.:)
