I am currently looking for a new caliber to replace my .308 for hog hunting. All of my hunting rifles to this point have been chambered in .308. While I love this caliber I am looking for a change. I would like something with a little more ump behind it. I am starting to get into reloading so I feel that has opened the door to exploring new calibers as well. I hunt mostly in the open fields of West Texas so I am looking for a long range, flat shooting cartridge for hogs and maybe the occasional coyote (I do have a dedicated .223 for coyote). I have been looking at the .270 wsm or a 7mm mag. I would love to here what everyone’s opinion on these 2 calibers or maybe another caliber I am over looking.

Thanks,
.308

For hog 7mm hands down due to the heavier more robustly constructed bullets avalible for 7mm rifles.

If it were me I would take a long hard look at a 300 mag

never know the difference....

I've killed enough wild hogs to repopulate the US, and no self respecting wild swine will know the difference between being hit with a 270 WSM, or a 7mm Rem mag. Use bullets from 130-40 grains and up, and place them well, and you will be fine with either.

the 270 wsm, makes the best jump over the parent cartridge, over the other wsm's. However, I read a very interesting article about a dude who does 1000 yds shooting comps, and what he does is takes 300 wsm carts, and loads them with 7mm bullets, 160 grainers. Fantastic power and range. of course you would have to make your own specialty rifle for this...

.

Why switch? .308 is an ideal caliber for these uses. Just got the bug, eh?

The 7mm mag and the 270 WSM both will work very well on hogs. Since you will be reloading, ammo availability is not a great concern. The WSM is available in a short action whereas the 7mm RM is only available in a long action. It's not that big of a deal, it's just a little lighter and a little shorter with a shorter bolt throw. You'll be happy with either one.
