I am waiting for a newly purchased rifle in .280 Remington to arrive. (Merry Christmas to me:p)

Can anyone give me their preferred loads for long range target?

Also, I am interested in the 100gr varmint bullet that Sierra has....any info on shooting this in .280 Rem?

Thanks....

Thanks....

NCSmitty.....this is helpful.....I have heard lots of great things about this cartridge and once I get a chance to shoot the thing (should be here next week) I can start the fun part of figuring out what load is best..:D

I saw an somewhat accurate post the other day in this forum, was something like this:
"I now know what I shoot for....to create more brass to reload!";)

I think you'll be better served with bullet weights in the 120-140gr range, for lighter loads, in .284 calibres.

Just my opinion, though.

And merry christmas to you too, Glockdaddy.

I have yet to do some long range testing but at 100 and 200 yards my particular rifle with 160's and r-22 produces the smallest groups so far. M77 mark II sporter with 1 in 9.5 twist 22" barrel. The lightest bullets I've used are 139 and they grouped well too. I'm new to reloading so there are many combos I have not tried yet. Good luck and congrats on the new 280.

Lighter bullets......

I think you are all correct, a heavier bullet will be more stable and accurate at the longer distances. I have had unusual success with an 85gr varmint bullet in my 6.5x55 Winchester. You would think that typically the 140gr would be the way to go...but I have yet to test that particular round...yet I have a full box of Sierra HPBT 140s that will probably be sent down the pipe with some R22 pushin' them. But, back to the 85gr...with IMR3031 I have managed half-inch groups at 200 yds....with a varmint bullet.

This led me to want to try 100 gr in this new .280 but the Sierra 130gr HPBT will probably be the first one I try...followed by a heavier bullet. There are lots of options.....too bad you can't buy bullets and powder in smaller quantities until you find that perfect load.:p No....let's buy a big box...:scrutiny:

Remo, Hyde,NC....Merry Christmas Guys....thanks for jumpin in to his thread. Not too many folks seem interested in this unique round.

Keep Christ in Christmas Gentlemen......He is the KING!:)

100gr bullets

Merry Christmas to you, Glockdaddy.

I forgot to add that I had a couple 7MM Remag's back in the day and Remington used to have 100gr. Bronze points for reloading. I used the old Hodgdon's 4831 and guesstimate around 3500fps and they were accurate and devastating on the woodchuck population. I believe they were the original "ballistic tip" bullets.
Bronze points are still available in 30 caliber but like everything, they are expensive.
