I am considering upgrading one of my Mauser 98 conversions from 7x57mm Mauser to .284 Winchester. It will be just a simple chamber reaming. I KNOW that the 7x57mm is a great hunting cartridge and I have other rifles in that caliber. I also know that the .284 Winchester factory ammo is much more expensive. I am not asking,"should I do it". My question is ,because I have no experience with the Winchester chambering ,does anyone have any thoughts on the .284 as a hunting cartridge?

1. Is the gun an intermediate length, or standard length mauser action?

2. If it is standard length, 280 Remington makes more sense, since the magazine will feed the 30-06 based cartridge much better.

3. If it is an intermediate, an improved 7x57 version would be my first choice for increased performance, followed by the 284.

It is a standard length M98 1912 Mexican made in Steyr,Austria. I already have a Mauser 98 (a Turk)in .280 Remington.
