CPL holder legal to carry in national forest would like to know if any one familiar with the Leavenworth, Washington area (no federal prison) knows of places nearby to easily get off the main road and let the wife shoot at a few milk cartons

You would be best asking this question at northwestfirearms.com where you will more likely find other WA shooters. Also, they have a specific "outdoor shooting places" forum for questions just like this.

The other thing to do is just call the USFS ranger station for that area and ask. I believe there is a station in Leavenworth itself. Here is a list of the stations:

In general, the rules are pretty lenient about shooting on FS land - call them and they can explain, and perhaps they know of a more dedicated spot that locals use.

This is one of the things I've feared, this is public land,it does not belong to the govt it belongs to all of us.
I've always had a hunting license in my area, which is good enough.I'm hearing that you have to have a reason to be in wilderness,so get a small cheap gold pan and the old mining laws apply.
I've found that if you're in a safe place,ie not hunting, bothering hunters, and pick up your trash;I've never been bothered.
I've not been in wenachee national forest but I've been off hwy 12 with my cousins and never bothered.
yOU CAN CAMP IN UNDESIGNATED areas for free as long as you have a fire permit and keep it safe.same for blm land.
If those watching our forests disagree they need to be reminded who pays their saleries.
