.Is the Nitrex TR1 1-5X32 really on par quality wise with the other "$300 range" optics it used to compete with?

The nitrex scopes are made by LOW. LOW makes the Bushnell Elite and Weaver Grand Slam and Super Slam line of scopes plus the optical components of Nightforce and Trijicon Accupoint scopes. Obviously, optical coatings and other specs differ from scope to scope, but LOW seems to produce some very high quality scopes and components for top tier brands.

The Viper was recommended over the Nitrex recently on Optics Talk (Viper line of scopes in general). I made a similar purchase last month and bought a Nikon Monarch UCC 1.5-4.5x20 (which is now sold out at Opticsplanet.com), which was more than either of the Vortex 2-7 or the Nitrex, but less than the VX-3 and Monarch African I had started out comparing.

I've never used a Nitrex, but I've read they are a little picky on eye relief. However, don't take that as gospel as like I said, it's only what I've read and I've never seen one for myself. One thing to consider with the Vortex is the great warranty and customer service you get. AT the same time if the Nitrex is just as good, maybe it's a better deal. I'm not sure who the Nitrex is.

Are most scopes in the $300-$500 range good enough not to have that fish eye distortion? Dont mean to hijack the thread but I'm in the market for a 1.5-6ish scope and hoping to spend around $500 but I dont want what you just posted when I look through it!
This distortion is called barrelling. You will see it even in optics costing $2k or more.

Viewing with any scope, binocular, etc; bring any known plum verticle line or object into view at the center of field. Move the optic left or right taking the verticle line closer to the edge. Sooner or later it will start to take on a bend like the side of a barrel.

Better optics reduce this, but it doesn't disappear. All optics are a trade off of design, engineering, materials, fabrication, quality control and cost. Depending on how these are applied you will get variations in distortion factors etc.

cleetus I was mistaken - Natchez doesn't have 10% off right now, it is $10 off of $100 (until Saturday night I believe). So the price would be about $80 after rebate.

The TR1s are pretty nice for the money. I bought 1, then another, then another, then a couple more, then one more. I have 6 of them now. I have three 3 x 9 and three 1.5 x 6 models. They are really nice for the price. I have not found any kind of issues with them. The clicks on the adjusters are very positive, and the magnification ring and reticle focus ring have an appropriate amount of resistance yet turn smoothly. All the reticle wires are clean and well defined. The glass quality seems to me to be on par with scopes in the MRSP price range.

I did see them marked at MSRP in a local mega sporting good store for some time, but they weren't selling at $300. For $300 I would pass them up for a Leupold VX2 too. So the store eventually closed them out for 1/2 price - $150. I think this was at least a year ago. That is how I got turned on to them. After trying the first one I had the wife go pick me up one more. Then I bought a third. At $150 I thought I was getting a real deal. Obviously $80 is even quite a bit better.

I really like the 1.5 x 6 model. Those 3 I bought recently from Natchez. Seems like the value deal going right now.

BTW, I don't know if you can get the rebate on more than one scope purchase.

And I thought I was bad! :D I am still contemplating one more.

I believe the rebate thing is per scope, because you send in the UPC code "proof of purchase" and the original store receipt along with the downloaded and printed coupon for the scope purchased. I may be wrong but that is what it appears to me.

Right now, they are perhaps the best scope buys going. That probably goes for all of the Nitrex models offered. The TR 2 models are argon filled, and have IIRC better lens coatings and another feature or two.

And regarding the $10.00 off; that is a special coded discount for those who have registered with Natchez and get their email offers. It applies to any purchase over $100. So you would apply the code to the purchase at checkout on a Nitrex TR One 1.5-5x32mm for example at $139.95, making the pre-mail in rebate price $129.95. So you are getting it after rebate for $79.95 + shipping.

I have a TR-2 2-10x42 with the etched EBX recticle on another AR. For $170 this scope is a steal. I'm thinking of picking up a Nitrex 4-20X50 with side focus for $289 so that I have some nice glass for my next rifle purchase...a Savage 10FCP McMillan;)

I own three Nikon Pro Staffs and I find them very hard to beat.
A Marlin 336 is topped with a 4x as is my T/C Omega with a 3x-9x on a Savage Edge.
Optical clarity, positive adjustments AND the price is right.

wnycollector - the 4-20s are nice, but be advised they don't have as much elevation adjustment available as the lower powered 3-15s or 2-10s. Don't know if you would care or not but if you are looking to shoot much beyond 5 hundred yards or so it may an issue. The turrets clicks on the 4-20 are 1/8 MOA.

I don't remember exactly how much elevation was available at the turrets, but it was quite a bit less than on their lower powered TR2 scopes.

I have a 4-20 TR-2 for my 16 RRA Varmit AR, for which it should be a nice fit. Haven't put it on yet though.

BTW the Nitrex sunshades are of very nice quality and they are also on sale for about 15 or 16 bucks depending on size. Also of Japanese manfacture.

Also, those etched EBX reticles are really nice. Very cleanly cut. And I like the small dot in the center of the seperated cross hairs.

Thanks for the heads up on the 4-20 elevation adjustment issue. I will be shooting on a 300 yard range most of the time but, a buddy just bought a farm with the thoughts of a 500 yards range dancing in his head;)
