Has S&W done a run of 686+ revolvers with 3" barrels? I know the 2.5" is a standard production item. I just think in an L-Frame, a 3" barrel would be better. The 586 L-Comp is a PC gun, and actually only has a 2.5" barrel plus 0.5" of compensator. Any genuine, non-ported, 3" seven-shooters out there?

No, but the CS-1 was a Custom's Service gun with a bunch of over runs that have been sold off. They are a 3" six-shooter, with a bead blast finish and a 1/10th front sight. Great gun if you can find one. If you really needed a 7 shooter you could have one fited by S&W.

3" 686+

Smith did make a run of 3" 686+ revolvers. I think it was a special run for one of their larger distributors. I have one and it is a pre-lock model, with an unfluted 7 shot cylinder, round butt with Hogue Bantam grips. It has a pinned ramp front sight, adjustable white outline rear sight and frame mounted firing pin. It's a series 5. The dealer where I bought mine had at least half a dozen in over a period of time. I purchased it new, but at the moment, I can't remember how long I've had it.

I have a 7 shot, 2.5" 686-4 that is pre-lock, pre-MIM and has a hammer-mounted firing pin. I ALSO have, in my hot little hands, a 3" CS-1 barrel. After a little under-the-hood work, this 686 has a VERY smooth action. Needless to say, this 686 and barrel will be making the trip back to S&W to be married up and refinished. It might also get the full-moon-clip conversion. This has the potential to become my favorite revolver. :D I have had two, 3" CS-1 revolvers and a 4" version. The 4" left me kind of unenthused. The 3" versions were just short of perfection. I sold both of them at near 100% profit, but regretted selling them as soon as they left Rancho Mossyrock. That grievous error in judgment WILL be corrected.....
