I have some interest in using a 3-point sling on my Marlin 336. It seems the two factory swivel studs are in the right place and I'd have to add one at the rear of the forearm.

My questions are:

Is the wood at the rear of the forearm deep enough for a stud (5/8" is needed, I believe)?

Does the short (middle) strap get in the way of working the lever?

Any other comments by people who have done this are encouraged. Thanks.

I've tried the 3 point before but ya gotta remember. All the good stuff happens below the rifle. IE shooting and manipulating the lever. The more stuff you dangle the more stuff your likely to get your mits jumbled up. I've tried a 3 point before(not with a lever action) and I really didnt care for it. For a hunting rifle like the 336 I fail to see the benefit. I'm sure the studs are deep enough by the way.

I'm not so sure that the wood is thick enough at the rear of the Marlin forearm for a sling swivel stud, or that there is room between the forearm and the mag. tube to attach the stud. Take the forearm off and look at it and see what you think. Perhaps the underside of the receiver could be drilled and tapped? I don't know so maybe one of the Marlin RKI's will answer that.

I like the 3 point Ching Sling and find it creates a solid support when used from a supported position such as sitting or kneeling.

Instead of a 3-point sling, you might want to look at the Safari Ching Sling (designed by Eric Ching, inventor of the 3-point Ching Sling found on the Steyr Scout Rifle - he posts here on THR as Slingster). Details are here, and I've attached a picture.

Hey, now you're talking, Preacherman! This looks promising. No short strap to potentially foul the lever, but a good method of locking the support arm to the sling. I like it.
