Hi,

I have a Remington 700 police LTR with the factory installed HS precision stock.

Somehow the rear sling swivel's threaded hole in the buttstock got rusted. It must be pretty bad because it spreads to any threaded swivel stud I put in there within a few weeks.

Is there any way to fix this so that my swivel studs won't keep rusting? I have tried soaking the threads with CLP for days then using steel will to rub off as much surface rust as I could, but it seems to come right back.

Thanks in advance.

PS: I don't recall ever getting the rifle wet, I'm usually pretty careful about that. The only thing I can think of is that maybe a swivel stud touched some moist ground while I was shooting prone at some point.

Buy stainless studs, or clean with steel wool and paint yours black. I'd just live with it, it won't hurt a thing.

I think adel means it could indicate high humidity where you're storing the gun, could be right.

The gun is stored upright in a safe with a goldenrod dehumidifier in a climate controlled room. There are a dozen other rifles in the safe and none of them have any rust on them. In other words, it's not the way it's being stored.

Take the butt plate or recoil pad off, and see if you can see inside it to see if there is trapped moisture inside the composite stock.

That's about all that can continue to rust a sling swivel from the inside out.

If there is water inside the stock, the only place it can get out is through the open holes that aren't sealed, like for the sling swivel and such.

How to dry it out inside??

Good question for HS Precision customer service.
But failing that?

Take all the screws and butt plate off and leave it setting in the hot sun for a few days.
Plus a judicious application of a heat gun, blow dryer, or heat lamp in your spare time at night.

I would try flushing the area with distilled water before drying. I would bet that there is a tiny amount of salts there attracting moisture.

RIG gun grease followed by annual inspection and reapplication if necessary.
