Vern Humphrey,

You are correct in your statement as this bullet remains a hallmark still. 1948 is its birth date and has been upgraded with better alloys and bonding ever since.

Despite these virtues, however, it has a poor BC and hence looses velocity rapidly and drops significantly at 500 yds; close to 5 feet. Furthermore, I have never achieved accuracy better than 1.5 MOA out of it while getting .7 MOA with other premium offerings.

Now for the gentlemen seeking to ''score'' at 500 yds, a 1.5 MOA and a below average BC are quite the hurdle.

I’ll stick to getting closer to my game ;)

The .243 is a good deer rifle, but if you want something a little bigger why not just get another .30-06. If you don't like the Winchesters, then I recommend go with a Remington, Ruger, Howa, or Weatherby; just depends on how much you want to spend.

Never justify your reason for wanting another gun just decide and get it. How about the 257 Weatherby magnum? It is a honey and was the favorite of Roy Weatherby all of his life. We talk about needing a bigger cartridge but remember that Karamojo Bell killed the vast majority of those elephants with the 7 mm mauser which is not as powerful as your 30 06.

The .270 Win isn't flatter than the .30-06. With both shooting 150 gr bullets, at 500 yrds the .270 drops 60" while the .30-06 drops 47". The advantage of the .270 is you can load lighter bullets. However, loaded with 130 gr bullets, the .270 still drops 48".
You can't really compare them using the same weight bullet. The whole point of the .270 is to shoot lighter bullets faster and flatter than typical loads in the .30-06. I'm also not sure where you're getting your numbers for the .270 but the tables I checked show several 130gr loads all dropping around 35 inches at 500yds. Not a huge difference from the typical 150-165gr loads in a .30-06 but definitely flatter.

By my math the 270 is the flatter shooting cartrage (I handload both) I can get 3,150fps out of the 130gr 270 without exceeding max pressure and the 150gr 06 tops out a hair over 3,000. I can get .420BC with the 150gr 30 cal and .460BC with the 130gr 270 so at a range on deer sized game the 270 is the clear winner. Throw in heavier bullets for larger game and I'll opt for my 06 any day, my 270 cannot compete with 200gr Accubonds.

Stay with the trusty old 30-06. It can take on any game on the North American continent. Very versatile for a round that has also seen Africa! Tim

Keep the .30-06 you have, upgrade the trigger, and glass bedded/pillar bedded or restocked to improve its accuracy and consistency. I know you want to keep it original, but for me performance is everything. Then you will have basically a new, more accurate, easier to shoot gun and keep you old friend at the same time for less money.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
