.30-06 semi-auto? Any ideas?

If he has that much 30 06 and wants to shoot it quickly without reloading why not just get a semi-auto 1919? I'm sure you can eventually hit whatever you want with a belt of ammo.

If he has that many rounds of ammo, I'd assume it is USGI surplus not match ammo, and there would only be a limited increase in accuracy from even the most superduper custom platform.

Yeah, get a Garand, and adjustable gas regulator nut (if the ammo isn't M1 ball) and a LOT of clips. You can go through that 5000 rounds easy enough.

OK I guess I have the answer... NO a 30 round .30-06 is not reasonable.

As I wrote like 5 times it isn't for me... and after seeing and/or shooting all the offerings in .30 believe the FAL really can't be improved upon love my FAL despite it's shortcomings... but I guess he just wants to do this project because he feels like it and not for practical purposes.

I will post if he comes up with anything interesting

Again, it's not me it is a friend- for one thing he says he has 5000 rounds of .30-06... if it were me I'd sell the ammo and buy a Springfield M1A.

Really the .308 argument is preaching to the choir and not the subject at hand. It's a project and the flavor the guy wants. Kinda silly to argue about the merits of chocolate when someone wants vanilla.
Why doesn't he just use the M1 Garand in it's original configuration? At least he won't have a bubbarized abortion that no one will want. If he needs the cash later on, he can sell the Garand for what or MORE than he paid for it. No one will want a screwed up Garand.

My Garand is the rifle I like shooting more than the others in its original configuration. It is also a head turner. Everyone seems to love the silly thing.

Has he considered a BAR (not the mil version) in 30-06? What kind of 30-06 is it? Is it Ball ammo?

How about a Remington 742 Woodsmaster? It has a box mag, but if your friend wants to play with tools, he can make his own box mag bigger, basing the feed lips and design on the box mag that comes with the rifle. That's beyond my ability, but if he was going to rebuild and mod a rifle, making a magazine should be within his ability. Word to the wise though, it's not the most reliable.

Garand mag conversion

Yeah, I was about to chime in go the FN49 route, but the 30.06s can be hard to find AND pricey! I think the Crawford County Conversion is just the ticket! Get a Garand (if you don't already have one) for less than a grand, and add their kit which looks to be well less than $300!!

What A Country!

Oh, sorry, somebody else uses that....

lol

Perfect. I sent this over this morning, I hope he goes for it. I'm thinking of getting one for my dad who also has a Garand- I emailed these folks but it doesn't look like they are getting back to me quickly and the web site appears to be kind of neglected. I'm wondering if they maybe did a single run of them and called it quits. Hope not! Thanks
