30-06 semiauto low recoil loads compatible?

I've always been told 150gr or less in my 742, they said the heavier bullets should be saved for bolt actions, I was never told that about the BAR.
I have a 130gr load that cycles the Garands and the 742 so you might give Garand safe ammo a try for reduced recoil.

Maybe not but there are the early bird discounts!

I would avoid the 742, the 7400 is much improved. I have had both. I don't mind the recoil, in my opinion they are better than a bolt action. Another problem is feeding from the magazines that have bent lips or weak springs. But if you keep it clean and fire standard or mild loads it should be fine. That said I would consider a new version Browning BAR. You can find BAR or 7400 in 308 or other lower recoil rounds. None of the Semi-autos will be as light as a bolt action. A M-1 Garand is pretty heavy for hunting.

I own a .270 Winchester Browning BAR (c.1993) and I can only recommend it. You used to be able to find a nice used one scoped, sometimes correctly, for 600$. The new Mark III is available with a detachable box magazine of two configurations in .308 Winchester if memory serves me. It is strictly a hunting rifle for me, but I would think they can be shot a lot if you are able to properly clean them, which I am not. I just spray G96 in there and pray. In more recent years, I added a boresnake to the drill. Good accurate rifle, never failed in any way. Has shot mostly Winchester 150 grains soft points (Super X ?), would be guessing less than a hundred and sixty. Farthest kill at 120-130 yards, most inside of 30-50. The usage dictates the appreciation. Will not part from it. It does give a sharp snap to the shoulder though at a bench. Newer ones have a recoil pad, I guess it should be better now in that area.

My 742 cycled anything I fed it from cheap military surplus to 165 grain Federal Premium ammo. The problem with it was accuracy. I could never get it to print two holes within 4 inches of each other at anything over 50 yards.

Present your Man Card - and skip the "It's a heavy rifle" line.

Soon as my time machine gets back from the mechanic and I'm in a time when such an unwieldy weapon is the best I can hope for, I'll post some pictures! In modern hunting situations, I can't justify it. I think it's a great rifle, no doubt, I don't think it's the BEST option anymore.

It's just a sweet shootin' rifle for huntin' < 300 yards.

Factory 168 gr. TSX at 2790 fps. - is beast of a round.

Yessir! The .308 guys have been saying that for years! Plenty o critters killed with a .308 in various semiautomatic rifles to support that! Generally those rifles spitting the 168 ttsx at 26-2800 fps are quicker handling though.
