I have reloaded 20 rounds for my 30-30 using BLC(2). I started at 36 grains and worked up to 36.9. I am going to use some 3031 next. I am using some 150gr Rem corelocs now but also will be loading some 170's. What are you guy's using and how is it working out for you.

8.5gr unique with 165 gr cast :)

However that is out of a Win 94.

I used to use 170gr sierra's with 34gr varget I believe. Don't quote me on that though, look it up first!

Broham, I started using IMR3031 for the 30-30 about 1976. I try other powders but keep going back.

These days I use 170g bullets exclusively. You can start at the IMR starting load (I think it's 27.2 or something) and work up. My 336 works best right around 28.0 grains or maybe a little more. When I go up to the max load I get only about 50 fps extra velocity, accuracy begins to scatter, and my shoulder tells me that I'm an idiot and I'm wasting good powder.

I've loaded and shot most everything in the loading manuals, and a few that aren't.

IMR3031 is good, as well as your BLC2(Win748). H4895 is also VERY good. As too is H322 which is very close to IMR3031.

My favorite is RL15. I get 2,400fps with a 150 (36.0gr) and 2,300fps with a 170gr (34.0gr). These are Alliant maximums, but are well handled by my Marlin.

I've had best luck with Remington 150 and 170gr Corlokts. I really can't recommend any other 170's as I've gotten poor expansion from other brands.

With the last batch of powder and bullets, I'm getting at or better than MOA. Not bad from a bargin-bin rifle. It's also tied with my Remington M7 in 7mm08 for my favorite hunting rifle. Light, easy to carry, and effective.

Um, currently I'm using 8.7 gr of Trail boss with a 150 gr plated lead bullet (x-trema bullets). I'm getting 1175 fps. Did I mention that it feels like a 22 magnum? :D

Trail Boss is about the funnest powder I have run into in a long long time.
I use it in my plinker rounds of 30-30 w/165 lead bullets. I also use it in my 38 spcl 125 lead RNFP. They load cheap and are fun for the whole family. Just great fun to shoot.

Cheers...

LGB

Going back to W-748...I just yesterday put three holes into a 3" orange dot at 100 yards using 33 grains of W-748 under a Speer 170 grain FNSP. Average fps 2100. Average ES 12.5...Best Spread pattern 1 5/8"...Not bad for an ol' man and a 60 year old Mod 94...

Just on a whim I tried some H4350 in my Marlin 30-30 with a 165 gr CoreLokt. It turned out to be a very accurate load. I don't use it on targets much, but it drops hogs like they've been pole axed. It's not too great in my 94 though, so it might be just a fluke with that particular Marlin.

Do you use a gas check with that?

I shoot the 160 grain Lee with a gas check and liquid Alox lube, and find that the starting load for any powder in the manual does just fine.

30-30--170 Lee

Hi Vern. Yes on the gas check. My mold gives a 180 gr. with gas check using just plain wheel weights and Lee liquid alox. I attach the check using a Lee push thru sizer at .309. I get 1540 f/s with my crony.------Good Shooting ----Papa smurf.

160 Lee !

Papa smurf here again Vern. I shoot that 160 Lee as cast Lee lube over 4.5 of Unique NO gas check for 960 f/s , try it , the group is super small-----
Good shooting---Papa

I am shooting 125 grain Sierra jacketed hollow points with 31.5 grains of H322, shoots around 2400 fps. Trying to remember but my 150 yard zero has a 2 rise and drops 2" to somewhere around 215 yards.

BirdHunter,

I too have used and like H322 with the Sierra 125gr JHP. For deer, this bullet is really hard to beat in the .30/30.

I had a batch of the original milsurp. H322. I could use 36.5gr in a Marlin 336A w/24"bbl. Velocity was around 2,650fps. Very effective on deer! About like a .257Roberts or .25/06 to ~150yds.

However, later lot's are somewhat faster burning. 34.5gr seems to be max now. Velocity duplicates the published figure of 2,550fps, and from a 20"bbl, not the factory 24"bbl.

My best friend uses this in his WinM94 and has "pole axed" quite a few deer with it. (as he puts it) He uses the M94 where shots will run under 150yds (WinM94 has a reciever sight on it), where shots run over 150yds, he uses the .25/06.

I killed my second largest pig with the 125gr Sierra JHP, complete penetration on a broadsde lung shot at ~70yds on a 175lb pig. Very good blood trail too.

I too shoot a lot of the Lee 160gr FN (mould listed at 150gr). With a gascheck I use either 30.0gr of IMR3031, or 32.0gr of RL15 for around 2,300fps.

My older brother shoots a LOT of these over 7.5gr of Unique, sized to .309 Tumblelubed w/o a gascheck and gets wonderful groups at 50yds, AND, they shoot to his sights too. Go figure !

One of these days I'm going to try Ross Seifried's trick of filling the nose of the mould with pure lead and the after part with wheel weights, and try tnat on deer.
