I'm about to go order a WGRS (Williams) rear aperture sight, and FireSight fiber-optic front, for my $175 pawnshop Marlin.

Before I order, is there some huge advantage to the Foolproof/Economy 5D model? It just looks more fragile with that arm, compared to the WGRS which squats atop the receiver. Other than that they seem pretty similar.

Let me know if I'm making a mistake on the WGRS...

The WGRS is OK, but it's fiddly to get adjusted and not particularly robust. The elevation setting, for example, is locked in with a single set screw that doesn't really get much purchase in the ramp upon which it sits. The FP is better in terms of robustness, but it hangs off the left side of the receiver and messes up the carry of the rifle something awful.

My preference right now is for the XS sight setup; much more robust than the Williams WGRS and less obtrusive than the Williams FP. The Brockman or WWG would be the n'est plus ultra of Marlin sights but they're also much mo 'spensive ($130 or more for just the rear sight).

I've not used the WGRS, but I have used both sets of FP/5D sights. I have the WWG rear ghost ring on a Marlin 1894C (it needed Loctite to keep from coming unscrewed, very annoying). The FP/5D is a breeze to adjust. I wouldn't be afraid to bump it any more than I would a scope, and even it does get a good smack, it costs less than half of what a decent scope would cost.

I have the WGRS on my guide gun (45/70) and I didn't think it was all that bad to adjust. It is a sight that doesn't allow for a lot of adjusting for different loads. I haven't had any problems with it for 2 years.

This is not really your question, but it is what I have, and works for me. I have three Lyman receiver sights (identical) mounted on three rifles of different model and make. One is a 1957 era Model 94 Winchester 3030, a Winchester Model 92 clone (Navy Arms) in 357mag., and a Marlin 1895cb in 4570. All three sights are actually for the Model 94 Winchester. Lyman and others said they won't fit the Marlin 1895cb, but they will, if one is careful drilling and taping the receiver. All three rifles have a XS white stripe front sight. I believe XS is overly expensive but, I forgot I could buy blanks from Brownell, which would have been cheaper to make my own. All three are zeroed the same way with the option of sliding the sight up for evelation on each according to calibur. With this setup on each, I can pick up any of the three with very little change in shooting style.:)

Just think about the diffrence in the between between your eye and the end of your front sight, you'll come to the correct decision.......Essex

Don't the WGRS and the Foolproof provide the same sight radius?
