I inherited a 30-40 Krag from my FIL who passed away in October. Only other rifle I have is a Model 270 22LR Winchester. BUT given the way things have been going, thinking it might be a good idea to have a few rounds of this ammo?

Is this still made? Looking at web sites haven't found any. Anyone know where 30-40 Krag Ammo can be found?

Also, is there any other type of ammunition that can be fired from this rifle?

Thanks and have a great Thursday!

In normal times, its not hard at all to find .30-40 ammo. I get most of mine at Bi Mart (which you may not have, depending on where you live), but most places with a decent size gun dept. have it. I took my first dear with a Krag sporter (in 1968). Its a great gun and a great cartridge.

Can you post a picture of your rifle? I'm assuming it's a Krag-Jorgensen rifle, not some other rifle type which shoots .30-40 krag, which refers to ammunition only.

A larger store will usually have some. Maybe not a mom and pop bait and tackle shop that sells a little ammo. As mentioned, right now there is a panic buying rush on virtually all ammo and everything is hard to find. You may find a box or two on a table at a local gun show. The Krag is one of those calibers that requires handloading for serious use. For just having a couple boxes on hand, it can be found.

BTW- For some reason the traditional 30-40 load uses a 220 grain bullet. Rather heavy for the caliber a nice 165 would make the caliber shoot better. I load 150 FMJ (military type) for plinking in my Krag. Although I guess I'll never find any more of those, now.

The Krag is a beautiful rifle and very smooth to operate. Some dislike the side mounted box magazine but I think it gives the rifle character.

Here's my Krag that I restocked.
