.30 cal surplus frangible bullets

Has anyone seen these before or perhaps loaded some?

M-160 .30 cal frangible bullets

I don't know what practicle purpose they would serve. I would expect they would require fast burning powder. I wonder about accuracy? Could they be loaded to function an M1 Garand?

You would have to be careful loading them for the M1 Garand, since you have to watch port pressure, or you'll bend the operating rod. These bullets were originally loaded for practice in 7.62x51 caliber machine guns. The mean velocity was 1,320 fps, and they're made from Bakelite and powdered lead. They were meant for close range practice with the machine guns.

For loading in .308, there are several surplus powders listed, such as SR8074, HPC-8 and WC140. This information came from Cartridges of the World, 10th edition, page 491.

Powdered lead, special powder; it sounds like it would be an interesting project for short range with a bolt action if any sort of accuracy could be obtained, but I think I have lost interest. I'm paranoid these days about lead exposure, and I would also hate to buy a bunch of them and find they have no accuracy.

hmm...mebbe a short range varmint load out of a 14" TC 30-30...I just wonder what velocity they could get up to before coming apart, though...anyone know?

What weight are they? Must be designed to not penetrate stuff
like walls or tear up ranges.

I pick up a k of these to experiment with. They are about as long as a 147 fmj, but only weigh in at 108 gr or so. I intended to use them for an ipsc match where they recognized bolt guns, but have not, as yet, shot them. I loaded 10 round and was going to check accuracy and velocity as soon as I could get to the range.

I look forward to hearing what kind of accuracy potential they have.

My first thought was they might be good for low velocity indoor range use, but the powdered lead part put that idea to rest.
